Anyone else having trouble drinking coffee?

Recommended Posts

I'm right @ 4 months post-op and have experienced much the same thing w/ coffee...I soon found that it wasn't so much the coffee I was wanting, but something flavored...so I bought several Torani sugar-free flavorings...in the flavors I once enjoyed in my coffees (hazelnut, cinnamon, etc) and I use them in my Protein shakes...and that quelled the craving.

I avoid coffee altogether...it just wasn't worth the stomach upset it was causing. We have enough going on with managing our new limitations and needing to be so disciplined that I simply couldn't be sidetracked with heartburn, nausea and the fear that if I "insisted on drinking that coffee", I might barf....not a risk I was willing to take.....Torani flavorings are a wonderful thing! <3

If anyone reads this they'll probably wonder at the totally out of the blue update, but I found a couple of sachets of Kenco Smooth (my usual brand) in my suitcase, tucked way underneath some clothes I haven't worn yet and I totally did a happy dance. I made a cup with half a sachet yesterday and it hasn't upset my stomach at all :-D Yay. Maybe I just needed what my stomach was used to? In that case, America, why don't you have Costa coffee?!

I'm eight weeks out @@JamieLogical so definitely at a stage it should be okay

I'm talking all different kinds. Decaf and caffeinated. Ground and instant. Store bought and from various coffee places. I don't have it strong either - in the UK we tend to use instant coffee more and I don't use Creamer, I use milk (hate coffee creamer) so even though I'm in the US at the minute I mostly have instant coffee with fat free milk from Whole Foods. I also have it pretty milky with no sugar.

I'm drinking regular tea every day - English Breakfast Tea - without any problems (thank god!) so it must just be the acidity of the coffee like you suggested @4MRB4PHOTO.

Sucks. Maybe I'll take a coffee break and try it again in a few weeks!

@@LuckyOne53 Thanks! You know, I decided the other day I'd try sparkling mineral Water because when I have still water on its own it just makes me feel sick/hungry and I get around that daily by mixing a bit of pure apple or orange juice in, but I thought it'd be nice to have an icy sparkling water with no juice...that is so not happening again. Upset my stomach so badly and in a different, more painful way to the coffee and I just thought, this is so not worth it. Suckage.

I'd have snapped someone in half had I not been able to have my coffee...

I'm not addicted...

I just...

Oh stop judging me!!!

Haha. I'm like that with tea - if I could have neither of them my attitude would seriously deteriorate.

@@Athenyx

It's not us...

Our attitude doesn't change...

It's THEM...

You know - the stupid people...

They can sense when we've not been caffeinically (made-up word) satiated...

And they act on it...

We're the victims here!!!

Victims I tells ya!!!

My surgeon did not want me to go off my coffee, pre and post op. He was concerned re caffeine withdrawals.

So, I had coffee with milk in the hospital.

At home I drink brewed coffee with milk.

Black coffee would be too acidic for me.

Adding milk to it makes it less acidic, and adds to my Protein allowance.

Even though milk is also a carbohydrate, ..... go figure .... perhaps due to its sugar content.

So far, no problems.

I am 24 days post op

Also, coffee can be dehydrating, so I am mindful of my Water intake.

I'm 9 weeks post op and just started drinking instant coffee. I use 1 teaspoon to 16 ounces of Water, use sugar free creamer and stevia. That first cup yesterday tasted so good even though it was weak. I am tolerating it well and maybe next week I will increase the amount of instant coffee.

I'm so with you @@KindaFamiliar - it's like when you're on the road and everyone is driving like an idiot so you get road rage and join in the fun

Good luck, @@De fluff, I'm sure it'll go swimmingly!! To stop my nerves I pretty much blanked out the whole thing and pretended it was a normal day - I was watching Super Girl right up until they told me to walk to theatre - totally took my mind off it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
