It depends on the surgeon and his skill level. Just go to someone who has done tons and tons of them and it should be okay.

What kind of surgery did you have on your intestines? The cause could be a bit of an issue, potentially.

I'll be 56 in November and I got my band May 23. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and diabetes runs (gallops, actually) in my family. I think there are a few folks online here who are in their 60's. As with any surgery, it depends on our overall health. Someone in their 20's could be a lot worse risk for surgery than one of us, based on their health issues. However, that being said, I FLEW through surgery, had much easier a time than MANY folks here half my age, rallied quickly and sailed back to work the 7th day and have healed wonderfully, lost weight quickly and steadily and had zero issues.

I was almost 62 when I had mine and had all the co-morbidities that you can name that go along with being fat. I was SMO...a BMI of 62. I just knew I'd be rejected. But my cardiologist (specializes in bariatric patients) did all my pre-op work, cleared me for surgery, and referred me to the most experienced and skilled surgeon in our area.

I did extremely well, have had no complications. I've been extremely compliant with my food guidelines. I've lost 152 pounds in the past 16 months.

From my research it seems that older patients are as successful if not moreso than very young ones......IMO - it's because we choose to have this surgery for much more compelling reasons that the young ones sometimes. For example, I was not wanting to lose weight to get into cute little jeans or a bikini or to catch a man - I made the decision to have surgery to save my life.

I am now off all my meds except a diuretic and my blood pressure and diabetes are totally under control without meds. I can walk again, I can drive again.....I have my life back.

Please know that there are LB infomercials and even some doctors who will tell you that with the band you can eat whatever you want, you just eat less of it. It has been my observation and experience that for the majority of people that is just not true. The successful losers I know are the ones who follow the same eating guidelines that the Gastric Bypass people eat. But it's much easier than you'd think once you get into it.

Best wishes to you.........

Hi

I an 57 and banded 7-16 in Mexico by Dr. Ortiz. Everything went smooth and I feel great! ! ! I've already lost about 30 lbs., but tomorrow is thre day I start solids. BTW: I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, one knee ready for replacement, the other one soon after. Already, my doctor has cut my night insulin in half and cut one of my night diabetes pills. My sugar levels have NEVER been so low.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A. Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
