The DUH thing I know!

He told me my weight is causing some stress in my life and a couple of other "thanks Sherlock" statements.

Wondering how much my visit with Captain Obvious is going to be....

He did bring up so good points. Things I have asked my self, but when you hear someone else say them, you think, WHOA, I better figure that out. Like the what are you going to do when you can't stuff your face? I said "um, take up knitting??" He was NOT amused. Someday I will learn to pick my audience..

Oh, one other thing that I thought was very interesting was that he said the people who lose their appetite when they get depressed have a much better chance of succeding with the lap band. I never forgot about that statement.;) He told me the reason behind this, but I was'nt listening to him because I was having a bit of the ADD's and was imagining myself as a size 7!! With a stupid looking smile on my face:nervous

I was in there for 30 minutes. He kept wanting to delve into my past and see if had any emotional hang ups from then. And since i knew I wasn't holding any grudges or anger I just told him that everything was rosy!. Someone told me that if you give the psychologist the slightest hint that there is ANYTHING in your past that might be the reason you are overweight, it might lead to a series of appointments until he releases you. Not saying this is right for everyone, because i am sure there is a reason for why we have to go to them.

Good luck!

My psyc. eval. was only about a half hour. He just wanted to make sure I knew all about the lap band and that I was going to have to change my eating habbits completely... blah blah blah... and he just wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into.

God, wish I had a surg date. I am just doing all the before hand stuuff first.

Mine told me anger can be a form of depressions, makes sense I guess, who knows. It explains why I feel irritated for days one end, probably mild depression which I have had in the past. He told me the only thing he could see was that 1.) My husband should be coming to ALL my appointments. He works at a hospital and has seen many, many, many patients with the band and RNY. He knows the drill and what the complications are. It's surgery though and he is worried, but not becasue of the unknown. I didn't think I would want him there for the shrink appt. He is coming to the RN appt and the Nutritionist since he does 98% of the cooking in our house. And just to get the info first hand on the different stages and to see if any questions he may have come up after what they have to say. The second thing was I needed to get my nighttime "head hunger" sort of bingeing under control, again, thanks Sherlock, why do you think I am trying to make these changes. I think he made it a way bigger deal then it is. I admit it used to be worse, and maybe I shouldn't have. Maybe he though I was sugar coating it or back pedaling.

It's best to be honest. If someone does truly have something, why not discuss it with a professional given the chance? It will only make you that more successful, not only with weight lose, but life in general. This type of surgery and life change can compound something that seems small now.

haha! I actually DID take up knitting, it was one of those things I always wanted to learn, and believe it or not, in the 2 or so months that I have learned, it has made a world of difference in my anxiety and temperment, plus its something to do while sitting in the waiting room.

My eval was last monday, it took about an hour and a half. Overall it was nothing I didn't know about myself except that I am not "depressed enough" to need the meds I had been prescribed ..which is ok, as I was not taking them anyway (they mess with the old libido and hey, who needs that! lack of sex drive is way worse than being depressed lol). My appointment was an out of pocket expense of $250 ..ouch.

Libby :peace:

I have my psych evaluation this Thursday. She said the appt. will be

2 1/2 to 3 hrs long. I thought that was a long time too, but my DH said "This is a major life change for you, not a month or even a year "diet", its your whole life. Whats 3 hours when you are talking about 40 or 50 years?" Didn't think of it that way, and it does make alittle more sense when you put it that way. Hope it helps to know we are all going through the same red tape you are grouphug.gif. Hang in... we'll get through it together.

I was told it was supposed to be over 2 hours as well, but I was the only patient there at that time and I guess I've kind of led an uneventful life (meaning nothing really traumatic has ever occured and I seem to lack large issuses other than portion control) so there wasn't much for him to talk to me about.

Mine was also about 30 minutes. Standard questions about what made me fat. Simply put I love food. I liked the taste. I liked to plan and prepare meals. At one time I thought of going to culinary school. I didn't hate Mom or Dad. Work is not that stressful. My wife and I have a good relationship and I am fortunate my 17 year old son is a pretty good kid. Oh and I don't binge/purge or want to commit suicide by eating myself to death.

I am guessing that some people do have emotional problems and need to be screened for it. But I guess I am sort of miffed by the stereotype that all of us got big because we used food as a drug. If that were the case I would be locked up right now since I have been without real food for nearly a month.

I thought kind of along the same lines a couple times. The fact that you are overweight means you have some sort of psych problem. Fat or thin, who the hell hasn't at some point????

I know some in-shape skinny people who are REALLY f'ed up. No one questions them for 4 hours when they eat a big Mac. I am starting to resent it a bit now that I know others only were in there 30 min to an hour. Must be regional, I have talked to a few other people who were in there as long or almost as long over the last week. No wonder surgeries around here are scheduled out 5-9 months. :angry

Mine was three hours, I had an hour interview with the therapist and then had to take the MMPI-2 which took me about two hours. Then I had to go BACK and do it again because I was supposedly portraying myself in too good of a light. Pfffttthththt!

That high score is also frequently seen in patients with higher education and a high IQ. Guess the therapist I went to thought that wasn't possible with me. LOL! He never asked what my IQ was tested at.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
