Straws!

Recommended Posts

I keep forgetting not to drink from a straw. I went on a long walk and treated myself to a fancy iced tea at David's Teas. And was walking along the shopping street just sucking away. Got home and had about 2 ounces left and went crap!!! No straws!!!

I'm 2 years post surgery and have been drinking through straws since I was 6 weeks out. In fact, I've walked into my surgeon's office drinking iced tea from Starbucks with a straw and he didn't say a single word. I'm sure you didn't do any damage.

The issue with straws is you might be prone to suck air as you get down to the bottom of the glass. Be aware of that - Don't try to suck up every last drop, and you're fine.

Been drinking from a straw from like the second week as it helps me to sip better. Doc was fine with it.

Remind me again why we can't use straws ?

I forget. Could take 'em or leave 'em. I grabbed a diet lemonade from Chic-Fil-A the other day....next day a hyoooge tea with Splenda from another local chicken spot......straws in both.....used them due to being in my car and driving.

DON'T USE STRAWS!

You might cause a partial vacuum while sipping and be sucked right through the straw when you stop and drown in your drink!

I read this on the internet, so it must be true.

I'm over 5 years since surgery, and have never been told not to drink through straws....not that I do it all the time, but if I get a drink with lots of crushed ice it makes it easier to drink.

Never had any side effects, not sure what to expect???

I drink carbonated drinks also. Not just too fast.

I was told not to in the first couple of months while your stomach heals. This is because you can suck air which in turn causes pain.

I have been using a straw everyday since about 6 months post op.

I use a straw, I find I sip better and gas has not been a problem at all with liquids. sometimes I eat too fast and then I have gas. and pain. but not when drinking. You will have to see how you do.

I never understood the straw ban. I get the theory behind it and all, but don't you swallow air every time you drink anyway? Its extremely unlikely you're going to have nothing but the beverage in your mouth when you swallow from a glass. Or maybe I just drink weird, I don't know. Unless you're at the very bottom of your cup, it seems to me that straws would make it LESS likely you'd get air in your stomach, since there is none under the liquid line. Plus straws keep you from gulping.

I use a straw for just about every drink. When I'm driving, I use a straw to sip hot coffee. I find that I am less likely to have a hot spill if I use a straw.

If sipping is the goal, sipping through a straw makes more sense to me.

But, as always, I recommend that everyone follow their own bariatric plan.

I'm with pretty much the majority so far ... I can understand not using them first 2 or 3 months out ... which I was religious about ...

but now ... almost 9 months out .. ( omg I could have cooked a kid already! ) MUCH rather have this surgery than a kid! LOL :)

I use straws now ... I have missed them so much ... I never ever liked to drink from the rim of someone else's cup ( like dining out ) ... yuck ...

and yes, I'm the one you see in the restaurants wiping her silverware on the napkin before using ... :(

I'm anal.

:)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
