Lap band to gastric bypass revision info

Recommended Posts

Wow. Its so interesting reading all your stories from USA. In Australia your Doctor decides whether you need a procedure...and the Insurers cannot refuse ANYONE.

By law the private health insurers must cover everyone without prejudice. And on top of that we have the free public healthcare service "Medicare" that covers all emergency medicine, hospital etc.

The idea of an insurance company deciding what medical care i need is just shocking and would make me so angry!

I have a similar story to you Stacylynn. GB in 2009...list a lot of weight initially and has gradually crept back on. Today i am the same weight as pre GB all those years ago

I met with my surgeon yesterday and he has schefuled me to remove band and do a mini gastric bypass in 4 weeks.

I hate my band. Had so much trouble but i am terrified about the MGB.

I'm worried about dumping and never being able to eat a piece of French cheese ever again.

I would love sone feedback on what bypass patients can actually eat, and do you feel hungry?

Is it true you just dont feel like eating?

The worst thing about the band is hunger that is always there due to the empty stomach just waiting for food.

Any feedback on whst you can eat and how you go when dining out would be much appreciated ladies! ☺

Insurance is ridiculous in the United States. It is a huge money issue here and everything we do medically revolves around the insurance companies. Some companies are easier to deal with than others and have guidelines and policies that are less stringent than others. It's crazy and sad that our health and access to certain care is dictated by these companies. And yes.....I am ALWAYS hungry with the band.....I want this thing out. I feel no different now than I did before my band.

Thank you all so so much for all the information and support!!!! I have been really upset and nervous that I was having the issues and no one else was ......the study you jnt mentioned....shame on these band manufacturers for making people go through this! 80% is beyond ridiculous and just plain scary. I agree with UsernameTaken, the scary part is the permanency of the bypass but I am sick and tired of this weight. Hey....we got this right?!?

My story is similar and I'm in the process of deciding whether or not to do the revision surgery. My band was successful at first and I lost about 60 pounds in 9 months. Then the problems started and I got really sick with a terrible sinus infection and coughing up the post-nasal drip caused my band to slip. Yes, it was some pretty violent coughing! At that point, the Fluid had to come out and it's been a struggle for 18 months ever since. The acid reflux, vomiting, and overall discomfort made me crazy. I got to the point where I couldn't eat anything. A few weeks ago, I visited the doctor and when he checked the band, it was so skewed that not even the barium was going through! No wonder I was dehydrated and sick.

We talked about getting me qualified for the revision surgery. He said he can remove the band and do the bypass at one time.

The part my husband doesn't understand is that when I don't feel well and when I can't eat anything, I don't feel like exercising. I take the dog for 2 one-mile walks a day. but I don't also feel like going to the gym or even running around and running errands. I have no energy more than I have any energy.

I know the bypass isn't a panacea and won't cure all of my problems...and I know I have to still eat right and exercise.. but for those of you who have made the switch, do you find it less challenging than the band?

Thanks in advance.

I'm having the revision from band to bypass on 3/28. The bypass eliminates the reflux. I can't wait to know longer have so much heartburn.

Interesting thing, I never had heartburn until I got lap band... Especially the last few years it's been bad had to empty my band twice completely and heartburn got better after emptying. Heartburn is the main reason I revising to bypass but also I feel that sleeve is such a hype right now like lap band was back in the day, plus sleeve is not good for those that are prone to heartburn, I don't want to go through another revision in the future.

Hope you are feeling more at peace about your surgery, I can't wait to have a date. Right now I am waiting for approval for insurance... It will be a week on Friday... It's like watching Water boil.... But I already have my appointments set up for surgery clearance in middle of April so if everything goes well I am thinking end of April beginning of May I should have my surgery. Can't wait for s new beginning.....

I just had to do 3 appointments with nutrionist, and see a pulmonologist. I had a chest x-ray, upper gi, and blood work. The whole process was about 2 months.

liquid preop diet for 2 weeks. I was really hungry at first, but after the first 3 days I was fine. I also had to drink magnesium citrate this morning and Clear liquids all day. Not to bad! I will update hopefully tomorrow after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
