I am exactly 14 days post-op from having gastric bypass. I haven't had any food in 3 weeks. Is it ok for me to eat mashed potatoes? If so should I make them really thin? Any advice at this point would help I'm in a program where you are basically on your own and my surgeon is over 3 hours from me. HELP!!

I wouldn't add any additional foods without your surgeon or nutritionist giving you the clear. Contact them and they can direct you. Depending on how you are doing with recovery will determine if they advance your diet or not.

I am also exactly 2 weeks post-op, doing well in recovery, and was given the go-ahead to advance from a full liquid diet to a pureed diet today. I will be on this for two weeks. Then I will move to a "soft diet." I won't be eating the harder-to-digest foods until I am 6 weeks out.

If your doctor told you to figure out yourself what you're supposed to eat, there are lots of pages online that will give you the details for each phase. Just Google "bariatric surgery pureed diet" or whatever phase you're interested in.

After you come up with a list I think you should still call your nutritionist and run it past her/him. Follow-up is usually part of the process for this type of surgery.

Good luck!

Thanks I have a list of ideas just really want mashed potatoes and I see alot of ppl eat them just didn't know I'd 14 days out was ok and he did my 1 week follow up in the hospital before I discharged ( I had to stay a few extra days because I couldn't get in enough fluids) so now I don't go back to him until the end of april.

Yep, my doctor cleared me for that. I can't remember when I progressed to soft foods.

RNY gastric bypass program requirements will vary by surgeon. According to my program, the first 4 weeks after surgery is Full liquid and one of the acceptable items listed was "Instant Mashed Potatoes". During week 5, the program transitioned to pureed Foods and "Mashed Potatoes" was added to the list.

I was on full liquids for 2 weeks and then moved on to soft foods. I am on that for 4 weeks. I actually could have ate them as part of my full liquid but it would have to be thinned out. Make sure it is without the peelings. But I wouldn't make them thick but not soupy either since they are really soft.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
