How soon did people quit smoking before lap band procedure?!

Recommended Posts

Hello!! I will be getting banded on April 7th and was never told by the PA or anyone at the doctor office I had to quit smoking, luckily I did a little research on smoking and read that you MUST quit smoking before surgery. I quit smoking yesterday 3-13-16 but am nervous. I usually smoke 1-2 cigs a day just after a stressful day of work. On the weekends when I have a few drinks I usually have a few more. I wouldn't consider myself a heavy smoker. Do y'all think I will be ok?? Anyone with similar situation!?!? I also didn't know how soon I had to stop drinking I know when I do my two week pre op, but is it not safe to have a few glasses of wine before that? Thanks!!!!

You'll be "ok" if you want to be. You are your greatest obstacle. Calm down, park the panic at the curb. If you feel an urge to smoke, drink Water. If you feel an urge, inhale as slowly and deeply as possible, hold to a count of 10, then exhale as slowly and fully as possible. Do it again. Do it whenever. Something about extra oxygen knocks the urge out briefly.

A great tool I have found is a Vapor Stick you can get them everywhere they are about 100 bucks for the whole system depending on which one you choose and it's not anywhere near as harmful as a cigarette. It takes the place of smoking so u don't get the urges

Thanks for the responses! I was just nervous about having enough time between quitting smoking and surgery date. Don't want any complications

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
