Some doctors don't. However, if your doctor does then you will be in good company. From my experience those that do the pre-op diet lose more weight and have an easier time with the surgery. You also would already be over your carb addiction so that's an added plus.

I only needed to be liquid for 48 hours prior. Having said that I was required to lose 15 to 20 lbs immediately preceding the surgery. So I cut out almost all carbs except for twice a week and was successful in losing the weight.

Here is a recipe that actually worked for me to eat almost every night. I always felt full and it was flavorful.

Taco salad

*2 cups shredded lettuce

*1 cup shredded cabbage

*2 to 4 ounces of ground turkey lightly cooked in low sodium taco seasoning

*2 tbs fresh salsa

*2 tbs of fat free sour cream (I only used naturally yours brand because it tastes legit)

*2 tbs homemade guacamole which was just avocado with a ton of lime and salt pinch

* 2 tbs Taco Bell mild taco sauce

No cheese no beans(because I don't like beans) and no tortilla. I would use a cheat carb day with a tortilla that was low carb. If I was especially hungry I would add more cabbage and lettuce. The picture below is zoomed in to the toppings and below that is about 3 inches on bowl which is the lettuce and cabbage you can't see. It is about 290 to 325 calories depending on the meat.

My doctor did not require any liquid diet. I could eat up till midnight the night before. My surgery went great and I haven't had any issues. I'm three weeks post op and have lost 30 pounds.

Mine does not require a liquid diet pre-surgery. They recommend a liver reduction diet which is essentially a South Beach style diet: low carb, lots of Protein, minimal fat (but not entirely ff). I will have to do 24 hrs of Clear Liquids for the day before surgery. Because I am moderately low BMI (39), I was told to keep my weight the same but the low carb thing has caused me to lose about10 lbs without feeling very deprived.

My doctor doesn't require anything preop other than not to eat or drink past 12 the night before. So happy there are others because I was really worried I was the only one!

3 weeks liquid Protein shakes...... one week down, two to go. I had already lost around 18 pounds before starting the preop diet. 9 pounds in the past week. Already hit my pre surgery weight loss goal set by surgeon.

My doctor requires a two week pre-op diet that's basically 3 Protein shakes a day and 2 green salads with zero calorie dressing. I can have sugar-free Jello and sugar-free popsicles. Getting started was TOUGH but I keep reminding myself that my surgery date will be here soon.

My doctor requires a 2 week Optifast diet before surgery. It's 5 drinks and 1 bar a day total of 900 calories. Also have to lose at 15 pounds before surgery to help shrink the liver to make the procedure safer. I start week 2 tomorrow and my surgery is Monday the 28th

I was only 24 hours liquid. I have had no pain or side effects from surgery. Have not needed any of the nausea/pain medications. Only 5 days out but down 10 pounds. I'm already sick of fluids, can't imagine doing 2 months prior to surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
