Approved protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I am a new member on the site. My surgery is set for 4/13. I am trying to get my house set up so when I get home it will be easy. Anyone know which OTC shakes are approved.

Whatever you select it is recommended that they provide at least 20 grams of Protein and less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Some examples of premixed Protein drinks that are recommended are:

Ensure High Protein

EAS Advantage Carb Control

EAS Myoplex

Muscle Milk Light

Isopure

Atkins Advantage

CytoSport Monster Milk

Pure Protein

Met-Rx Protein Plus

Oh Yeah

and Premier Nutrition

and then there is a longer list of protein powders used in making Protein shakes.

Also your taste buds may change after surgery, which means that you may want to wait a little bit until after surgery to stock up. It also means that you may need to experiment with the various options available to find something that you can tolerate after surgery.

Your doctor should also have a list of shakes he suggests. The interesting thing with my Doctor is that he does not approve of so many of them yet his daughter in law that is also a bariatric surgeon in our town does!

Mine is super picky...

Bariatric Advantage, Chike, and New Direction (soups) are the only brands he wants me to use for the first 6 months...

I drink Premier Protein now for Breakfast and I love it. My friend, who had the surgery with his daughter in law is allowed to drink Premier... I don't really understand his way of thinking on this topic. I have decided to follow his rules since I chose him as my doctor, but I look forward to the day of drinking Premier again after a few months of following his rules ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
