Work in healthcare - what to tell them?

Recommended Posts

I also work in the medical field, and told my coworkers. I only ran into one person that looked like she wanted to say something less-than-positive, but she wisely held her tongue. Everyone else was supportive or curious and asked lots of questions. One woman that I work next to is diabetic and around 300 lbs, and is very interested in the sleeve procedure. I'm hoping she'll attempt it once she sees how well I'll be doing! I like that I have people to discuss it with and go over recipes and tell my stories to.

Funny how I felt a lot more comfortable telling them than my family... (only my grandmother knows).

I am also in the medical field and have no desire to tell anyone at work about my surgery. I scheduled my vacation for the day of and 10days post-op telling everyone I was visiting family and then starting a 1/2 marathon training program when I get back for a race in October . . Most of my colleagues are very encouraging about the idea of marathon training because they see it as healthy. I figure it covers the 5 small meals a day thing and it gives me extra encouragement to run everyday because I have to keep up my cover story or else tell them the truth. So far no one has questioned it so *fingers crossed* I will be diligent with my running and can actually run a 1/2 marathon by October lol.

Hernia is believable I would just read up on the "type you have" and the surgery/recovery process to have some general knowledge in case you get someone who wants to talk to you about it. l was going to say hernia too but when I was researching the details it felt like too complicated of a lie for me to maintain. Personally I felt like the simpler the lie the easier it is to make believable.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
