Proud2BMe 1,016 Posted March 10, 2016 Man, I can eat a ton of it! It always scares me because I can literally eat a huge bowl of salad and still have room to eat more. However, I'm reminded of my restriction when I try eating normal food. I guess it's because greens are mostly Water. At least it's a healthy slider food and not anywhere close to say eating crackers, chips, or other notorious high carb slider foods.
cherri2082 149 Posted March 10, 2016 I am 2 months out and afraid to try it. Maybe its time! Sent from my SCH-I545 using the BariatricPal App
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted March 10, 2016 At two + years, I can eat a cup of food at one sitting, but salad???? I can eat two cups and still be hungry. I do think it is the Water factor. By the time I chew, chew, chew, there is little left but Water.< /p>
Rogofulm 2,440 Posted March 10, 2016 I've stayed away from salads for a couple of reasons: 1) I used to eat a huge healthy salad every day -- while I was gaining weight before surgery, and 2) I worry that it will be "filler" that prevents me from having room for my Protein. Remember, food should be eaten in order with Protein first. Usually by the time I'm done with my protein, there's very little (if any) room left. losergrl75 277 Posted March 10, 2016 I'm 8 weeks out and just tried salad for the first time last week. I had heard such horror stories about it not being tolerated well, that I was scared to try it. I , knock on wood, did not have any issues digesting it. Because of the worry of getting Protein, I topped it with 2.5 oz of tuna salad so that every bit of lettuce I took also contained Protein. I don't know if that is why it went down so easy. I was also surprised that I was able to eat the 2.5 oz of tuna on top of the 3oz of lettuce since I can usually only get about 3 oz of food total in. Like others said, I guess because it breaks down so much.
WorkinOnMe 596 Posted March 11, 2016 I agree ... salad goes down waaaaay too easy for me! If I am going to have salad with my meal I always start with 3oz of Protein (chicken, tuna, steak) and then once I finish that if I can tolerate it, a few bites of salad. If I try to eat it AS my meal, I can eat more than I am comfortable allowing myself.
livvsmum 2,369 Posted March 11, 2016 I agree with the poster above. I love salads. That was one of the things I was sad to have to give up. About a year post op I started having them again. I will do either a spinach salad with a grilled chicken breast on top, or a spinach salad and scoop of light chicken salad. I eat the Protein first and then have a little room for a few bits of the spinach. I never do lettuce. It is completely devoid of nutritional value. I need the Iron and one way I can get it is through the spinach so I opt for that. Honestly, I've been eating that for lunch for over 2 years now and I've lost 130 pounds, so I guess it's working :-) You just have to eat the Protein on it first. Also....I skip all the added things on the salad bar. You know...all the goodies that add hidden calories. Just spinach & protein. That's it.
