I'm just starting this journey my consultation with the surgeon is March 22nd . I worry a lot about complications and things that could go wrong in surgery more than anything .. Anyone else worry about this .. I also worry about how long the whole process will take and if I'm going to back out

It's very common to worry about complications, especially if this is your first surgery. What you need to understand is that the complication rate for WLS is VERY VERY low. The mortality rate for VSG is much lower than knee replacement. Would you hesitate to have a knee replacement if you needed it?

You may be shocked to learn that Grey's Anatomy is not a realistic portrayal of the medical field. :P

Blood clots and pneumonia are very real risks for any surgery.

The good thing is that your surgeon is aware of this. That is why you have to follow your surgeon's instructions to the letter. His or her's primary goal is to get you through surgery alive and well.

Even if you think something you are asked to do is silly or that you can't do it, do it anyway. Everything from your preop diet, getting up and walking, following your food phases, avoiding NSAIDs, taking blood thinners, drinking water/staying hydrated, getting enough Protein, to breathing with your spirometer, etc. is for your benefit and to minimize risks.

If you have carefully chosen a skilled and experienced surgeon and follow directions you should be fine.

Hi - I'm a newbie too and have similar concerns but with high bp and cholesterol and rheumatoid arthritis (i'm 42) the health risks are much greater if I take no action. So like you I'm looking into the risks such as clots etc. Do you have a date yet? I found once I had the date (April 21st) I wasn't thinking about backing out and that it became / is becoming real. I guess the more research we can do the better armed we'll be. Best of Luck x

Hi ???? I'm at the last stage I'm now just waiting on my surgery date I attended the the pre op class last month. Depending on what insurance you have it could go by fast. Unfortunately for me it's been about a 6 month journey I guess compared to other stories I've hear it's not that bad but in the process you become so impatient. I guess now my biggest fear is the anesthesia.

I hope the process goes by fast for you though! I'm sure everything will be okay.

Well you have to see a nutritionist then you have to see a psychologist and get his approval and that was pretty much it for me. My insurance didn't require me to do a 6 month diet prior to surgery or anything like that. I think it just all depends on your insurance. It's mostly a waiting period. Waiting for those appointments.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
