Thank you

For any reason, is the LES compromised during a Gastric Sleeve or an RNY? Do any of these surgeries, including Lap Band, weaken the LES? Would scar tissue from a Lap Band weaken the LES? Sorry if this question is too broad.

You will be operating on me on Monday. I am slightly nervous about the surgery, but you come highly recommended. I have stuck to the diet, and not strayed once.
Honestly, the only thing I am scared of on the whole planet is blood draws and IVs. Please tell me that there will be some sort of sedation available when I get to the hospital for my pre-surgery workup.

Thank you for the fast response. Knowing that puts me at ease. I know it is strange, but blood draws and IVs are the only thing on the planet that scare me. Looking forward to meeting you in person

Hi Dr Illan, I may have asked you this but when you do a sleeve revision to mini bypass, do you re-do the stretched sleeve to make it small again? Or just the bypass part?

Hi

It depends on the surgeon dissection technique on the esophageal gastric junction. It can be weaken if we over do the dissection.

Also, Studies have shown that increasing body mass index plays a role in the incompetence of the gastroesophageal junction and that weight loss and lifestyle modifications reduce the symptoms of GERD.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
