Hiccups and vomiting 2 days post op

Recommended Posts

I'm still in hospital and have not had a good day today. Due to the surgery everything is swollen so food (clear fluids) is not going down very quickly. Help!

I just had my bypass done this past Monday, today is Wednesday and yesterday sounds like you! Yesterday was torture, I too was in a lot of pain from the gas and extremely nauseous.

Today is much better! I too couldn't get anything down yesterday and was vomiting and coughing up a lot of phlegm...but today is definitely a new day. Make sure the nurses stay on top of it all!

Thanks Meldyer. I've had a very rough day and cannot sleep at all. It's been nearly 5 hrs!

it will get better! The first week is rough, and then from there it improves a lot every day. Right now, even tiny sips are probably "too much too fast" for you (hiccups and vomiting are textbook reactions to eating or drinking too fast) but again, it will get better soon! By the end of the first week I was able to drink 8 ounces in about 45 minutes.

Hang in there, and just keep trying. :)

The food stuck thing is from eating too much or too fast. What are they allowing you to have in the hospital? Should just be liquids.... Even then you can drink too fast and cause the hiccups. (I ate a lot of ice and still ate that too fast!) Hang in there!

I ate a lot of ice during my stay in the hospital. My taste buds changed and Water tasted terrible so I avoided it. They started to bring me sugar free popsicles and that was good. I did a lot of walking in the hospital and that definitely reduced the bloating, the pain and made the recovery process go much smoother and quicker.
