3 Weeks Post Op and Cannot Feel Port

Recommended Posts

I am finally to the point where I am not in constant pain any longer and have been pressing abdomen area to try to figure out where the port is. I'm actually having anxiety about it, because I think it may in the very center just under my ribs, because I still have pain there. Does anyone else have a port placed there? The surgeon said he prefers to place in the center, but he didn't exactly say where in the center and I'm worried it is too high.

The port is supposed to be anchored to the abdominal muscle wall, to prevent it from flipping - migrating.

Although I have read here that is not always the case and people report all the time about their port flipping.

But if the port is attached to the abdominal muscle, then it could be deep depending upon the layer of fat between the muscle and the skin.

I have no belly fat, and mine is an exposed bump clearly seen by all.....

Look for your largest scar and then feel about two fingers up from that. Mine is on my left side and sometimes feels like it is right next to my rib. Now more than a year post-op , it is finally settled into where it doesn't feel like it obtrusive and moving and painful from time to time. I'm surprised how long it took to become part of me.

Different surgeons place the port in different places. (That written by an English major.) @@send2steph's is on the left, mine is on the right. Some are higher than others regardless of the location. As B-52 mentioned, yours may be under enough fat that you can't feel it now.

You'll feel it later. Stay tuned..

OMG, I am post-op 12 days. I had to take liquid pain med sometimes, but was able to function fairly well without it at times. Then it happened...5 or 6 days after surgery Constipation set in. I actually screamed, cried, and stayed on the floor in my bathroom. I tried 2 fleet enemas, suppositories, Vaseline and gas-x. I was so stuffed I could not get the enamels or suppositories in. After a day of unbearable pain, my np made an appointment for me to see a surgical proctologist. After an injection in my anus, 2 fleet enemas, the doctor said she had to do an impaction. I can only explain the pain of an impaction as 1 step below natural childbirth. I had to wear 2 adult diapers about every 2 hours, but at least I had relief. She told me that with a painkiller like the one I had I must take Miralax. Not one other person said this. Day 10, the port started to give me pain. It's similar to a golf ball about 2" on the right side of my chest under my right breast. I'm totally drained of energy and in pain. When I cough or sneeze, I have to hold the port area. I feel as though I will never recover from this and I don't know what to do. Help please. Also, I take Miralax, Benefiber, Vitamins, Water and shakes everyday. Any help would be appreciated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
