Anyone know of any public weighing scales in the US?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

So I'm road tripping in the US for nearly three months, and at home in the UK I only weigh myself once a week on the scales in Boots or Superdrug (they're a little like huge pharmacy and toiletries shops in every town and city). I don't want to be rude and weigh myself by stepping on scales in various stores as if I'm testing them, and I'd really rather have the receipt for my records you get when you pay to use public machines...only I've not seen any public machines anywhere and I'm not sure the US has them.

I may have to resort to buying some, but it'll be a bit inconvenient as I have so much stuff to lug around already and I literally only want to use them once a week!

If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated! Oh, and right now I'm in Seattle and I'd like to be able to weigh myself tomorrow if possible!

Gyms, free clinics, some community centers, that's the only public scales I can think of

Check out the gym in your hotel or the spa

If your doing air bnb type stays maybe they have a bathroom scale you can use....

I would suggest too, don't get overly upset because there can be differences between scales so if your a bit heavier from one scale to the next no worries!

My bariatric program had a scale in an alcove for people to drop in and weigh.

You might see if there is a Bariatric Center of Excellence near where you are staying that might let you drop in.

Also, a lot of gyms and health centers have them. You could even check with your hotel. They may have one or know of one nearby.

Some of our drugstores and Walmarts have drop-in clinics. I know you can check your blood pressure. I never thought of it but they probably have a scale.< /p>

I love it -- measuring one's travels by friendly scale locations.

@@Inner Surfer Girl suggestion to check local bariatric offices. Come to think of it, I don't see why almost any walk-in clinic (they seem to be the latest development in med care in the U.S.), hospital or even street-level doctor's office wouldn't say "Sure" as long as they're not teeming with clamoring patients at the moment. Smile, show your apple cheeks and let them hear the accent; tell them you're traveling and losing weight.

This could be so exciting. If you feel bold enough to ask almost anywhere, I hope you'll report back on the reactions as you go along. If the first place you stop screams at you, don't tell them I sent you.

Have a wonderful time. There are a lot of good people out there. Will you be coming to NYC?

P.S. Other large pharmacy chains are RiteAid, CVS and Walgreen. If you happen to walk by what looks like a very old, privately-owned, small pharmacies, they may have the old scales. When I was a child, a hundred years ago, it was standard. A penny or a nickel, I think, but no receipts.

Walmart/SAMs club has a scale on their blood pressure reader. I use that one weekly because I find it very similar to my doctors. Also, it tracks my progress for me when creating a profile.

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna take all the advice on board and just keep my eyes open for opportunities like you all suggested! I looked on a map and saw there's a Walgreens and another pharmacy near where I planned on going today so I'll stop off there to see if they have any scales. I had a look into clinics local to me and some of them seemed really dodgy so I nixed that Idea for the minute - as a solo female traveller I'm trying to avoid anywhere I might feel too uncomfortable, even if it's in my head!

@@Nurse_Lenora Thank you for the travelling advice also I did think about doing a travelling blog, but as I'm trying to get myself into the right headspace to write my novel I thought it would probably distract me! I'm too easily distracted!

I am in fact doing Airbnb at the moment, and for a few other of my stays, but unfortunately on this one they don't have any scales that I can see, but it was a good suggestion and I won't take it to heart of the scales fluctuate

There's a swimming pool in this apartment complex so when I go down for a swim later today I'll see if there's anything down there - you never know!

Also, good call @@Inner Surfer Girl - when I'm staying at hotels along the way I can ask them for advice. I'm definitely not afraid to ask locals for help I'll also keep an eye out for drop in clinics in Walmart etc.

Lol @@WLSResources/ClothingExch I'll let you know how it goes if I have to resort to digging around for a set of scales with whoever will let me use them I can't open my mouth without someone commenting on my accent at the minute - someone asked me if I was Welsh yesterday. I really don't sound Welsh but I'll take it.

I'm solely around the West coast and (what do you call just inland from the West - the Mid-West? I dunno) this time around. Thank you for the good wishes though

In the end I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and bought a set of lightweight portable bathroom scales! I have a car for the next ten weeks so I'll just keep them in the boot (trunk ).

Sounds like a great solution.

I am see it now, your novel will be a piqueresque tale of a woman, with a vaguely Welsh accent, who discovers herself by weighing herself at roadside attractions, samples exotic truck stop Protein, and meets quirky locals of all sizes as she travels solo across America!

Can't wait to read it!

Lol. That would be good...except I like writing sci fi. The woman would have to have some sort of special abilities, or else be an alien. That could work - I'm going to Roswell!!

There you go! An alien goes on the road trip with her.

Did you ever see John Sayles' "Brother from Another Planet"? For some reason that just came to mind.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
