Week 1 - Am I drinking too much too fast?

Recommended Posts

No. I didn't even read your whole post, but I can say "no" with 100% confidence. It is not possible to drink too much or too fast. liquid passes straight through your sleeve in a matter of seconds. It will not "stretch" your sleeve or hurt you in any way.

The only dangers from drinking are drinking WHILE eating or drinking immediately after eating. If you aren't feeling any restriction with liquids in the days immediately post-op, you should count your blessings! It just means you have less swelling than us unlucky ones who struggle to get our fluids in those first few days.

How long is it necessary to sip?

If you can handle more than sipping, then go ahead and do so. The sipping is to be cautious and not cause yourself discomfort. But if you gradually increase the amount you are taking in at one time and give it a minute and don't feel any discomfort, then it's probably safe to drink some more.

Good, because I can take a few swallows and be fine, I just wait a few minutes between after I've taken a couple. Thank you so much, this had been a learning process. Still struggling to get all.liquids in. But I believe I'll get there

I am on 14 post op . Right from the first day I never even felt like I had surgery. I have had no pain I have slight bruising around my incisions. I have had no problem drinking my Protein shakes or getting all my Water in . I am getting scared that I do not feel any restriction but from what I read that is normal with just liquids . I am just worried that this surgery is not going to work and I am going to fail at this . I have only lost 1 pound in a week .

@tkcan. That is exactly how I felt! I even asked the PA when she called to check in if the dr forgot to do the sleeve after the hernia repair. She laughed and said nope she saw him do it. Everyone is different and for those that can tolerate the drinking of liquids, I say "bottoms up!"

I am 12 days out, and I have no problem drinking 11-12 oz. at one time. The doctor assured me fluids cannot stretch the sleeve. I am just concerned that I can take in so much without feeling full.

I am 6 days post op and struggling to get all liquids in. It stressed me yesterday so today I have just slowed and taken things slower. I'm trying my best . Feeling worried I will dehydrate .

The only way you will ever feel "full" on liquids is in the early days post op *IF* you have a lot of internal swelling or later on post-op if you drink too soon after eating. Liquids should pass straight through your stomach. If you don't have internal swelling, there is nothing to hold the liquids in your stomach and make you feel "full". So you have nothing to worry about. Once you are onto soft and solid foods, I am confident you will fill up quickly.

Another thing to remember is that a lot of damage was done to the nerves in your stomach, so it may be a while before you receive proper "full" and "hungry" signals. That's why it will be very very important to eat on a schedule and to pre-measure your food.

Oh my goodness! 11 oz is too much! Take it down to 5oz and sip it over 25-30 minutes. You will have difficulty loosing weight if you're already stretching your stomach. Didn't your dietitian tell you about that?! The faster you drink the easier it is to stretch your stomach again. There is a lot of info out there. I have been taking it real easy- I am almost 3 months post-op and there is no way I could fit 16 oz. of Protein shake in me. I can easily sip up to 16 oz. of Clear Liquids over the course of 1-2 hours- but that is the only thing you should be taking that much time to get down. I would definitely recommend talking with your nutritionist or surgeon asap. Best of luck.

Liquids can't stretch your stomach. You have been misinformed.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
