Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I have had my band for about a month and still have to wait 1 more week for my 1st fill. Now that I can eat normal food again, I have noticed that bread actually kind of hurts when I swallow it (mainly as it gets close to my stomach). Of course, I don't eat it now, but I was wondering if this is normal. Is that "hurting" feeling what getting something stuck feels like? Thanks,:help:

Hi Isabelle,

bread is a really common problem food for a LOT of people. My doctor pretty told me no bread. So, yeah, I think it's normal. You can chew and chew bread, but it still forms kind of a mushy lump on it's way down.

I can't do sandwiches at all. bread just doesn't work for me. I got my first fill after 3 weeks but I think most surgeons prefer you to wait longer. I had no problem with my first fill and am glad I got it. Good luck and it will get better.

No bread for me either. Tortilla shell wraps, donuts, cake and any type of Pasta do not go down well at all.

I can do crackers with no problems.

(Rosemary & Olive Oil Triskits...Yum!)

My Dr and nurse (nutritionist) made it pretty clear before surgery, to not eat bread, Pasta, rice, and flour torts. Beside the fact that they will probably get stuck, they are loaded with bad carbs. We can only eat so much. Eat Protein first, then veggies.

That being said, I can eat a "hard shell" taco now and then. But I realize a consistant diet of them will not be good for weightloss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
