What causes "water" nausea?

Recommended Posts

Ok veterans what causes this annoying Water nausea? Has anyone's surgeon or NUT provided a scientific explanation? I am 11 weeks post sleeve with few complaints. But why does drinking Plain water turn my stomach? Why does adding crystal light drops make it tolerable? My sleeve is also fine with tea which is mostly water. Finally does it last forever? I would love to kick artificial sweeteners and that can't happen until I can drink plain water.

In the beginning Water did this to me and I learned it was the temperature that caused it. To this day I still only drink spring Water and it has to be room temp.

Occasionaly I do enjoy tea made with milk for my dessert but those are the two things I drink.

I will say I am very picky about water though. I think some waters like Dasani and Aquafina taste dusty where as spring water is delicious.

Weird huh?

My Water nausea is temperature related too. I have to drink ICE COLD water... with ice literally floating in it. Or hot beverages. Anything room temp or even just refrigerated sits in my stomach like lead. I'm 18 months post-op.

Before surgery, I loved to drink a glass of ice cold Water. But after the operation my taste buds changed dramatically. The Water in the hospital tasted very very chlorinated and I couldn't drink it. All I took was ice chips while I was in the hospital. When I came home it wasn't much better. I am 34 months post-op RNY surgery and I drink water but it is not one of my favorites like before.

My surgeon gave me no explanation. I have/had Water nausea. I was never able to drink plain water post op even with trying varying temperatures. I finally found propel water and did fine with that.

Just recently at almost two years post op I can tolerate a bottle of plain water. Still can't drink more than one or two a day. After that I have to add flavor drops or drink a propel.

I learned a long time ago that I cannot drink a lot of Water at a time if it's cold. I have trouble getting it down, and it fills me up more quickly. Room temperature is the way to go for me.

Part of your problem may also be that your pouch/sleeve has so much less room in it than your old stomach did.

Early on I couldn't drink Water either, had to only drink Powerade(blue only) and slowly introduced Water but only Smart Water or Figi brands. All other waters taste gross to me. I also stopped being able to add flavors to my water too. It all sounds super silly but I've learned not to upset the pouch!

You know I have had this problem all my life. Even before surgery I could not drink plain Water without feeling nauseous about it. I could do a few sips here and there and on a very hot day after much exertion I could drink more Water than not but never could sit and drink water by the cup or the bottle.

I can taste he difference in the water from where it would come from, and still can depending on the bottle of water. Spring or purified. Tap water is the same. If you get water from different restaurants there are some places I can drink the water and other places not.

My husband think's I'm crazy...but I know it's a thing.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
