What should I expect from first appointment?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm new to the forums here (kinda...been lurking for a few months lol). I've gotten a lot of great information from reading all of the posts. After a few years of going back and forth, I went to a WL seminar back in January. Now I am actually excited about the journey that I am about to embark on. My first appointment/consult is tomorrow March 8th. And now I'm getting nervous I guess. I hope this is normal lol. Just not knowing what to expect. Or afraid I'm gonna forget to ask a question. I guess I just wanted to vent a little... Any advice y'all can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This journey is a pretty emotional one, so all these feelings are 100% normal! Not much happened at my first appointment other than speaking with my surgeon about the procedures and what I was thinking. Then after I met with the NUT and spoke about the six months leading to my surgery. You'll get weighed and receive your bmi. I was sent home with a large binder with a ton of information. Also, they'll give you deadlines on the pre op testing that needs to be completed before a surgery date. Best of luck tomorrow! Congrats on making the big choice.

This is exactly how my first meeting went, too, although I have a 3-month supervised diet. I was so nervous beforehand that my BP was 174/80! But I left the office feeling optimistic about the journey ahead.

@@Crntainer2016 - get a notebook and write down any questions (write down the answers) and take the notebook with you to everything related to WLS.

welcome to the BP family!

TAke a written list of questions with you -- those that have occurred to you already and whichever may arise from the responses here. Include anything that you wondered about at the info seminar.

You'll find, however, that many of your questions will be answered before you get a chance to pose them.

Take it easy. It's only an appointment. You won't be led off to the guillotine. Not yet, anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
