Question regarding the first week and drinking liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I had a question I thought I would run by You experts before asking my dr. I am following the rules to a t of what I was sent home with and I am 5 days post op. Based on everything I have read, I have heard it is very difficult to drink liquids the first few weeks. I get a little gurgling sound, but that is pretty much it. I alternate 1 ounce Protein Drink and 1.5 -2 ounces of Water (more water because of a bladder infection) every 10-15 minutes till I hit my 60 g of Protein. If I am able to do this fairly easily does that mean that my gastric sleeve size may be bigger? I hope this doesn't make me sound like an idiot for asking... I am just curious.. I am so glad I found this app! What I have read so far is very helpful so thank you contributors!

I just had small quantities over the entire day. For the first few weeks my body told me when I drank too much too soon. Just be sure you don't drink while eating. My dr told me I could start drinking an hour after I ate, I'm almost 6 months out and I adhere to that.

From about the 3rd day post op I found it very easy to drink my Water and Protein drinks. I don't think everyone has problems drinking... it is just that the ones who do are more likely to post about it to get feedback and support.

Thank you.. I just wanted to make sure. It may also be due to the fact that I am on anti spasm medicine as well since I had hiatal hernia repair surgery at the same time.

It is probably more correct to say that it can be difficult to handle liquids early on, but it not necessarily will be difficult - there can be quite a variation in results, primarily due to how much inflammation one may experience in the newly reworked stomach. It may be significant, impeding flow through the stomach, or it may be minimal allowing relatively normal drinking. I, too, had little problem with liquids even in the hospital, while my wife could barely down her nominal stomach size in a sitting - both are within the range of normal expectations according to our doc.

From what I understand, liquids don't sit in the stomach very long if taken alone... so given your modest rate of drinking - 2oz per 10-15 minutes, it may be that your stomach is emptying that liquid as fast as you are filling it.

Fluids go through your sleeve pretty quickly. At 1 week post I was able to drink 64-80oz fluids and drink my Protein Shakes to get at least 60gm Protein every day.

I am 4 days out from my surgery (3/8) & it's getting a little better but I still feel very bloated most of the time. I try to do 1 oz of Water or full liquid every 15 min but it's been hard and sometimes uncomfortable. I've been breaking my pills up and every now and then it will hurt when I swallow one. I'm looking forward to feeling back to normal.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
