Waiting to start the Gastric Bypass nutrition program

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am super new to this forum and the process of weight loss surgery. I went to two different facilities in Atlanta, GA. True Results and Johns Creek Surgery. Both seemed great, and both are telling me that I don't have any co-morbidities. I am 5'4 and weigh 230 lbs.

They said my BMI is not high enough to start the nutritional process if I use my insurance. I must wait until I get around 237 or 240 lbs. Is this right?

So, in the meantime, I am exercising 5 days a week and now I'm attempting to eat healthy. Can I go on a high Protein diet while I wait to start the nutritional appointments?

And, I've been exercising for 4 weeks straight and the scale is consistently going up since the end of last year.

I'm a severe sweet eater and I have been working to control these urges by eating meat, eggs, Protein shakes, and fruit.< /p>

Your help is appreciated...????

Cut out the fruit, it is full of carbs. I think you have to have a BMI of 40 or higher for my insurance company. I'm not sure about the others

I am new here too. I am taking a 50+ multi Vitamin, 1000mg of Vitamin C (500 twice a day), Pepcid twice a day and Biotin 1000mg once a day, all required by the surgeon prior to surgery coming up in may. I am eating a lot of veggies and have cut out bread, crackers, chips, popcorn and no sugar. I have lost 11 pounds in about 8 weeks. I can only exercise a little due to two previous back surgeries but I have a good outlook on the program. yogurt is an acceptable form of Protein, I use oikos triple 0 and it is great. it does have some sugar but no added sugar. good luck and enjoy the journey.

i have diabetes as a secondary reason for the bypass. i am insured by Kaiser permanente. the surgeon says as soon as i have the surgery i stop taking all diabetes medications. i have completed the required 12 week course and the surgeons seminar. these seminars can be found online too. if you have the nerve you can watch the surgery on you tube.

i believe your bmi has to be above 35 and you have to have a secondary condition such as diabetes. a bmi of 40 or higher should get you approved if there are no secondary conditions.

My insurance also required a BMI of 40 or over without any comorbidities. However, a sleep study is usually a pretty quick way to cover that, as most folks overweight have some form of sleep apnea.

I already knew about the BMI requirements before I went to see my doctor, so I just made sure those last few pounds were 'in place' before I went. Of course, my doctor is a stickler for testing for sleep apnea, and I now have a CPAP, lovingly named Horton (Horton Hears a Who)... I'm hoping Horton and I are short term buddies until I lose some weight after the surgery :P
