Scared to eat different foods

Recommended Posts

I am 7 weeks postop and have only been eating Protein and a tiny bit of veggies. I want to start expanding the foods I can eat, but I'm scared. I don't want to eat carbs like bread, rice, or Pasta, but I'm thinking of stuff like nuts, plain Greek yogurt, berries, things like that.

What bothers me is, will my weight loss slow down because I'm introducing some carbs and sugar? Should I just stick to protein only with a little veggies?

I would really appreciate some suggestions of what to eat that's still good for me

First, I don't know your program and you should probably check with your NUT to see what they want you eating at this stage. Everyone's program and stages are somewhat different. That said ....

At 8 weeks I was eating soft foods such as Greek yogurt (my favorite was the Dannon Triple Zero banana and coconut), sf Jello & pudding, cream of wheat, scrambled eggs, chicken salad (mixed with plain greek yogurt instead of mayo), egg salad, and Laughing Cow cheese wedges. I still had one Protein shake per day just to make sure I was getting my full amount in, but I started to get most of it from foods at this point.

I stayed away from nuts, Protein Bars, and fruits until pretty close to 4 or 5 months. Even now I limit how much of those things I eat anyway.

I wasn't allowed nuts or berries with seeds until 3 months post-op, so you should definitely check with your nutritionist. As for carbs, I was allowed "soft whole grains" somewhere around 6 weeks post-op, iirc. However, I found anything "bready" WAY too filling still at that point. I remember trying to make myself an open face egg sandwich with a teeny tiny piece of this toasted: http://www.pepperidgefarm.com/ProductDetail.aspx?catID=754&prdID=121328

I got a little over halfway through it and thought I was going to die. But that was way more than 7 weeks out. Closer to 3 months probably? I can do a whole piece of toast now, but I'm 18 months out. Big difference!

You should definitely be doing Greek yogurt now. Surprised your NUT didn't have you on that already in the full liquids phase... Great source of Protein and easy on the stomach.

I guess I should better explain what I mean about my post. I know what I can eat, I'm looking more for different food/snack ideas. I haven't had Greek yogurt because I find it too high in sugar and carbs (except for plain). I don't want to eat bread or anything like that.

Because I haven't had any sugar/carbs I'm scared that introducing these foods will hinder my weight loss.

I went with Dannon Light & Fit Greek. Only 9 carbs. Made a great afternoon snack at work.

Did your nutritionist give you a carb range to stay in? Mine did not. I found that just by meeting her 100 grams of Protein per day goal, my carbs were naturally limited. Simply didn't have room for them. So I didn't make any special effort to AVOID carbs. Just focused on my Protein goal and the rest fell into place.

No, mine did not give me a carb limit either. What other Snacks do you enjoy?

Well, I'm a year and a half out, so I have no limits on what i can eat anymore. Early on, my go-to Snacks were Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt, string cheese, turkey sticks (like beef sticks, but with turkey), and Protein bars. Once I was allowed nuts, I would often do an ounce of peanuts for a snack as well.

I understand your emotions. in December of 2014 I was diagnosed with diabetes, and I was scared to death to eat fruit. it took my doctor about 3 months to convince me that I had to expand my foods.

Follow your plan, add one new food per day, and see how your tummy does. It will be alright. the weight will stall and go stall and go - that is normal, but if your Protein and carbs and fats are where they should be, it will work out just fine.

Hey emdutch, it sounds like we have the same taste in foods. Which Protein bars are you using? And have you started eating fruit yet? I know this isn't a big deal to some people, but carbs are the enemy for me and id like to avoid them as long as possible.

Only 10 grams of Protein for 190 calories doesn't seem like much of a protein bargain. You can get 20+ grams of protein for that number of calories from Quest Bars or Combat Crunch.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
