GibbsGirl 483 Posted March 4, 2016 I ran into a friend that knows about my surgery. She kept looking me up and down, then saying "Your wasting away" Look at your bootie you have one, your legs on and on. I know she meant well but fast forward to Walmart a couple hours later and I go straight to the plus size section clearance rack. I actually pulled some items off thinking if they are big that's ok. I stopped myself and moved over a section, but could not put the other stuff back. Stuff... it was two pair of workout pants. Then I spotted another clearance rack with the pants....gulp another section over. That is where I found the proper size. The whole time feeling like an impostor. This little lady looked at me and I was waiting for the your in the wrong section comment or look. I didn't even go put the plus size back in the correct section, I hung them on the rack and ran to the register like a thief. I just feel a little freakish right now, my next purchase has to be a new swimsuit. I'm gonna need a Valium.
ryannryann 6 Posted March 4, 2016 My mom is about a year post op and says she feels the exact same way. Although she feels a lot thinner she doesn't believe she is thin enough to not shop in the plus size department, even though she is about a size 10/M now. I also think she feels obligated to shop in the plus sizes because I do, and we have the same style. But I personally think that you've earned it to shop in whatever department you'd like and do not let any frets or glaring eyes stop you from getting what you want. livvsmum 2,369 Posted March 4, 2016 I definitely remember that feeling! I remember once pulling a shirt out of the dryer thinking "crap! I shrunk it!" Then I put it on and realized I just really was that small. The shirt didn't shrink, I did :-)
OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted March 4, 2016 Before surgery I always went into regular size stores to get accessories or shoes. I never once in my whole life every had anyone tell me I didn't belong in a store or they didn't carry my size. Don't worry about it. $$$$$$$$ is $$$$$$$$$$$

JamieLogical 8,710 Posted March 4, 2016 I've been maintaining at my goal weight for over 6 months. I haven't been in plus sizes for close to a year probably? I STILL feel SUPER self-conscious walking into any normal clothing store in the mall. I feel like everyone is staring at me thinking I have no right to be in there. I used to only ever go into those stores with my much thinner sister and at least then I felt like people knew I was only in there to help shop for HER. Lisa_85 118 Posted March 7, 2016 That happen to me I went to dress barn the other day to buy a couple of outfits because I gave away ALL my big clothes an at first the girl in the store didn't even know who I was and I would shop there monthly. Then she told me I should be shopping down stairs and I'm looking at her like I'm not going to fit in those sizes yet. She was like yes you will and bought me some stuff to try on an when I looked in the mirror I was like is this even happening I haven't wore these sizes since College! glitter eyes 1,398 Posted March 7, 2016 @GibbsGirl. I had the same feelings when I first began to shop in the regular section. I too felt like an imposter and did not enjoy buying clothes very much. I think the first time I went into Victoria Secret I almost had a panic attack. It took a lot of courage but I tried some stuff on and brought some things. That was tough. When I was overweight and would go there to buy stuff for my daughter they were always so rude I was expecting them to throw stones at me any minute. If it helps, I feel much more at ease buying clothes now. Even though I have been at the same size for a year I still can't believe it some days. The shopping will get easier!! Hang in there. Geron Girls 70 Posted March 7, 2016 I do this all the time. My girls will hand me a shirt of theirs to wear and I'll be like "No way is that my size.!" And every single time I put my jeans on I think there is no possible way I'm that size.
GibbsGirl 483 Posted March 7, 2016 I finally tried on the exercise pants, I am just still shocked they fit. It's nice knowing I'm not alone in those feelings.
