mmorris4 14 Posted March 4, 2016 What was everyone told in regards to their birth control pills? Is it the norm to have to go off them 4 wks prior until 2 wks post op? Thanks in advance. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
dede0314 356 Posted March 4, 2016 My gyno suggested I take out my nuva ring before surgery... I think it helps prevent blood clots... Just make sure to get back on after surgery and be careful while you are off
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted March 4, 2016 Yes, that is pretty normal, due to the risk of blood clots.
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted March 4, 2016 I was allowed to keep taking mine straight through. Edit: I wasn't allowed to take anything by mouth the morning of my surgery (not even water) so I missed that day. My husband and I also used backup birth control for a good month+ post-op because I have heard a LOT of horror stories of people getting pregnant even while on BC post WLS, because of the increased fertility. Plus I was on an antibiotic for a couple of days post-op.
reinventingmyself 47 Posted March 4, 2016 I was allowed to take mine entire time. I take mine as a hormone replacement. Anesthesiologist even allowed me to take it morning of surgery with a sip of Water. I am about 2 weeks out but haven't had any issues. amandastearns 79 Posted March 4, 2016 Most doctors require women on birth control to stop taking it pre op do to the risk of blood clots. I was able to stay on mine because I have the implant in my arm. They were sure to give me blood thinning medicine because I was at higher risk.
