Surgery Today - dealing with gas pain

Recommended Posts

Hi folks. I had my surgery this morning and have been in pain ever since. My incisions do not hurt. Rather it is the pain from the gas in my stomach cavity.

How have you all dealt with this? How long did the pain last? I've been given reflux, gas pills and pain medication throughout the day. I've also been using the gas-x strips. The pain is less acute now, but not going away. Please help!!

I found that the best thing you can do for gas pain is walk. As soon as you are allowed to of course.

I was walking up and down the hospital corridors (pushing my IV pole) as much as I could.

I had my surgery on 2/22 and I totally feel for you! Keep walking! It's the best way to get it to break up. Mine lasted 6 days but it does go away! Hang in there and good luck!

Walking is the best advice. It stayed with me for a few days after surgery but then just went away. I also had it with drinking liquids and breathing out before every sip helped to reduce the gas when drinking. Hang in there, it gets better!

Hope you're feeling better. Like everyone else is saying, you have to walk. I too had horrible gas pains. Never had any pain from my incisions, just gas pains in my left shoulder. It will get better!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
