Confused about quantity of food

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm 9 days from bypass on 2/22/16 and have lost 16 lbs so far, my bloating is getting so much better finally and no longer look 8 months pregnant (wooo).

My question is regarding quantity of food. I'm concentrating on Protein Shakes and do the premier ones that are 30 grams Protein, but since I'm supposed to eat only 2 ounces per meal 1 shake takes me 5 meals to get through! And then fitting 2 ounces of Water between meals...have I misunderstood the capacity constraints?? Because I can't imagine being able to get 64 ounces of water in a day plus liquid food!

I was told no more than 8 ounces of liquid in a 30 minute time frame for the beginning. I never had issues with that and got it in.

It sounds like you might want to call your NUT for some clarification. I would guess the "no more than 2 oz." is based on solid food, not liquids.

After RNY surgery, the initial volume of food per meal is 2 ounces. As time goes on, this volume will increase the further you are post-op, until you reach 1 cup per meal.

The daily Protein requirement is a separate issue. It does not count against your food limit. In order to make the Protein shakes more tolerable, I found that if I blended in a half a banana, it made the Protein shake more tolerable. The half a banana did not count against my meal limit. In a few months from now, you can begin to use Protein Bars to meet your Protein requirement. The Protein Bars do not count against your meal limit.

The daily Fluid requirement is not only Water but all liquids. So the Water you use to make the Protein Shake counts towards this limit. So does milk. So does the water content of Soups. So does the water you take for your Vitamins.

If you aren't getting in the minimum of 64 ounces of liquids per day, you're at risk for dehydration. As others have suggested, talk to your nutritionist. With all of the information that's thrown at us as we are going through the process of having the surgery, we are bound to get things mixed up and forget some things. If you aren't able to get in your nutrition and liquids, it could indicate a potential issue that needs to be addressed.

liquid passes through more quickly than solid food. Early on you should be able to take in 1 oz of Fluid every 15 minutes. That increases fairly rapidly once the swelling goes down. At this point you should be able to take in at least 2oz (possibly closer to 4oz) every 15 minutes. Keep sipping at your Protein shake until it is gone - hopefully it won't take you more than an hour. After you are finished with your shake, start working on other fluids.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
