Calories Don't Matter?

Recommended Posts

Thanks livvsmum, I want to try and stay under 20. I was originally under 50 carbs a day and that led to me losing 106 pounds after vsg now I need to kick things up a bit to lose an additional 80 pounds. I already work out 5-6 days a week so I definitely need to watch the carbs. I figure I have a nice reserve lol

Just curious if anyone out there has read the recent books by Dr. Hyman and Dr. Ludwig regarding weight loss, carbs, fat, and calories. Their theory is basically that calories in calories out is outdated and not the way our bodies work. They say it's all about our insulin, that a high carb diet and the resulting insulin produces the bad fat in our bodies and causes us to gain weight. They believe dietary fat is good for us and that our diets should be higher fat/higher protein/lower carb (including lower whole grains). I had my gastric sleeve about 14 months ago and weight loss has been extremely slow for the last 6 months or so (about 2 pounds per month), despite doing everything right. Two weeks ago I bought the Hyman and Ludwig books and started eating the way they suggest, and have lost almost 4 pounds in two weeks, without tracking food or calories, basically eating what I want within their guidelines. I think the difference is truly amazing so far. Any thoughts???

I was never given calorie guidelines by my surgeons office and I've never counted calories. I lost over 100% of my excess weight and kept it off for over 18 months eating intuitively just how you described....high protein/high fat/low carbs. I do need to supplement with insoluble Fiber (Apple pectin fiber and ground flax seed) to stay regular, but that's about it. Maybe I should have written a book ;)

That's great kindle! How much did you lose and what are your macros for a typical day?

Lost 100 pounds. No idea what my macros are. Don't count, don't measure, don't track. Never have. I keep a running tally of fluids in my head and typically drink 80-100oz. I have a Protein shake and Quest bar everyday which gives me 40-50g Protein. Then I eat 5-6 times/day....mostly high fat/high protein things, but I do include a little fruit and non starchy veggies every day. And of course my fiber.

I occasionally indulge in Desserts, candy, alcohol, bread, and rice, etc but it's certainly not an everyday thing. I'm one of "those" people who had surgery so I wouldn't HAVE to diet and measure and track everything I eat. If I wanted to do that I could have saved my $7000 and joined weight watchers instead.

Awesome advice kindle. I'm 6 months post op and lost over a 100 pounds as well. I definitely feel as though I'm on the right track but it's always good to hear from other sleevers as well. Thanks for sharing

Wow!! Congrats to both of you. I'm wondering about your ages. 100 pounds in six months is incredible. I'm 1-1/4 years out and haven't reached 100 pounds yet. I'm wondering if age has anything to do with it, since I'm post menopausal???

Perhaps age can be a factor Momcat, I'm 27 years old. I was sleeved 8/21/2015,

SW 359, CW 238, I lost 121 pounds so far but I still have 88 to go. I'm 5'9 and my goal weight is 150. That would make my BMI within normal "healthy" range but my surgeons goal for me was 165/170. He told me quite honestly that 150 for me was doable just that it might take 2 years.

Basically that is what my post op diet is: high Protein, reasonable fat ( for example I eat regular cheese, miracle whip and olive oil in moderation) and my only carbs are non starchy veggies and Beans. Very few grains or potatoes. Yes it works!

I lost 100 pounds -- took 16-17 months all together.

I think you'll find when you are at your goal that you couldn't give a flip how long it took you to get here.

Losing your excess weight is the easy part -- if you're consistent and determined.

The *fun* part is maintaining your new, low, healthy weight. I really mean that. It is fun for the first time in your life NOT to soar back up after you have "lost it all."

:)

I actually lost 22 pounds on my two week preop diet (I kicked that liquid diet's a$$ !). Took 9-10 months to lose another 78. I actually maintain about 97-98 pounds down. I was 45 when I had surgery.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
