Any other 'oldies' out there?

Recommended Posts

I'm off to see the surgeon tomorrow, this will be my second visit. I last saw him in late 2014 but was unable to go ahead at that time as I needed to upgrade my health cover and there was a 12 month delay. It was my gp who suggested I look at surgery as I have type 2 diabetes and hypertension, both controlled with medication at the moment. My bmi is 41. 12 months ago I was convinced that the band was the way to go, but down the line I'm edging towards the sleeve. The thing is, I'm 67 and I'm very nervous about it all, verging on the frightened. I want to be around a little longer to see my grandies grow up and get fitter for this next stage of my life. I feel this is my last chance. It would be so lovely if I could hear from others who've been in my situation. I've been on an Australian site but it was a waste of time really.

@

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome

Age is just a number

so is your weight

i was sleeved 1 month shy of 58 years OLD

now i am 62 years YOUNG

i am NOT an"oldie"

i am a "goodie"

look at me standing tall

playing with MY grandkids

(note my name under my pic)

having various medical problems will be helped with WLS

alleviated or gone

(my biased opinion - sleeve is the ONLY way to go) my thought!!!

being a little nervous, scared is understandable

also, excitement, happiness

decisions are hard to make

you are not getting any younger ;)

good luck

kathy

I was 57 when sleeved and can honestly say its the best thing I ever did for myself. Age is only a number!! Next year you'll be 68 with or without the surgery! You'll just be a healthier 68 with the surgery.

Thank you lovelies for your upbeat replies. So, I've seen the surgeon again today and he sort of put a spanner in the works by introducing the gastric bypass as an option whereas I had only been considering band or sleeve. He said that for diabetics it was a good way to go. I had neglected to do much research into the bypass. However, I did say that I had read that there is every chance of insufficient nutrient intake and he said that I would need to have Vitamin and mineral injections. Well, sorry, but thanks but no thanks. So the bypass it is and I am booked in for the 16th of May. I could have had the op on the 1st April but would have had difficulty raising the money in time. Two weeks before the op I have an appointment with the dietician. Onwards and upwards.

I was sleeved almost 2 years ago at the age of 70. I no longer have to use a CPAP & I use less oxygen. Because of a lung condition I will never be able to get off oxygen no matter how much weight I loose. I feel so much better. My cardiologist & my pulmonologist both had to sign off on my sleeve surgery. I came thru the surgery just fine. One of the smartest things I have ever done.

I'm confused-my usual state of mind...:) Are you having the bypass, or a sleeve? I applaud you for your decision to go for either one. I am 63 and have absolutely not one regret about having been sleeve. It was one of the few good decisions I've made. :) Welcome!

Oh dear, I think I'm confused too, must have been the euphoria of a decision made. I am having a sleeve! That will teach me to read what I write before reaching for the post button! I hope to be like you Valentina and have no regrets.

You will be my inspiration. It's so wonderful that you feel so much better. I hope to gain energy and a new lease of life when I no longer have to carry around so much excess baggage.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
