My goto's have always been DayQuil/NyQuil. But any of the Tylenol Cold/Flu, Cold/Sinus, robitussin, sudafed, alka seltzer plus products would work. Very few cold medicines contain NSAIDS. If I have a bad cough I get my PCP to Rx guaifenesin/hydro Syrup - works better than anything OTC.

I've always used Advil/cold and sinus. So I'm lost. I will try some of the other ones you have suggested :) thanks

I guess it's just a coincidence that you've used the one cold medicine that does have an NSAID. But if you start looking at labels you will see that's the exception to the general rule. The other ingredients that actually help cold symptoms are probably the same. They just use acetaminophen instead of ibuprofen as the pain/antipyretic portion.

I have had good results with Tylenol Cold and Flu (multisymptom day and night). I also like to use a saline mist like Ayr for my congestion and Ricola sugar free cough drops.

I always use a combo of Claritin D and Mucinex, because I'm always struggling with sinus congestion whenever I get sick. Just be sure that you only get the "D" version of one of the two. Don't want to double up in pseudoephedrine .

I had a cold a few weeks ago and took Tylenol cold and sinus. It really did nothing for me so I had to just let the cold run its course and wear off.

ive been sick for almost 3 weeks ... Tylenol cold products are doing NOTHING ... but that is the only medicine on my "approved" list from the surgeon .. I'm 8 months out ... so I'm thinking it's ok to take Nyquil and alka seltzer ... those were my go-to's before surgery ...

ugh.

Delsym is non-alcoholic and works to suppress the urge to cough. I'm one week today as well and certainly don't want to cough.

I don't tend to take "multi" products since nursing school. It's too easy to overdose on Tylenol because it gets added into everything, plus you end up taking components you don't need. Instead, I take just what I need for the symptoms that are keeping me from sleeping or working or whatever:

Now, none of these are restricted by my surgeon, but you'll want to clarify with your team.

For ANY type of sinus issues use a saline rinse in whatever form you prefer - neti pot, spray, etc.

And a humidifier in the room unless you know humidity in your house is at least 45%.

For sinus congestion, get the "good" Sudafed that you have to sign in blood for at the pharmacy counter.

For drainage at night (or if you're lucky enough it doesn't make you drowsy) Benadryl.

For drainage during the day, Zyrtec or Clairitin, whichever works better for you.

For cough if your doc won't prescribe something better, Delsym. Plus whatever cough drop you like (I like Halls)

For chest congestion, the Mucinex that is just the guaifenesin (expectorant) - and drink TONS (and I mean an extra 24-32 oz at LEAST) of extra Water with it or it won't work as well.

And for the record, with any viral infection a *little* extra Vitamin C or Zinc can help, but don't overdo it or you're just making expensive urine. Homeopathic medicine is just expensive sugar pills. And every version of Airborne is a complete rip-off, medically speaking, all you're doing is making REALLY expensive urine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
