Cardiac clearance question

Recommended Posts

I went to see a cardiologist today to get clearance for my surgery on March 17 and he said that I need to take a stress test to be cleared.

That's fine but here is my issue. I don't have any cardiac problems. In my family's history there is no Cardiac history of no sort. My PCP did an EKG before I went to this cardiologist and he said everything was FINE, however my bariatrics team wanted an EKG from a cardiologist.

Now I go to this guy he says my EKG was fine but before clearance lets do a stress test. For the most part I'm am a healthy just overweight for my height. I'm not on medication never have been I've had to c-sections and was up walking around the same night.

I'm thinking he just want to milk me and my insurance company because before I left the off is schedulers cornered me into scheduling a 6 week check up with this Dr after my surgery. However I can get this done with my PCP it's a one stop shop.

Did any of you that DO NOT OR DID NOT have cardiac problems have to take a stress test?

No that's the first time I've heard that My surgery is the 16th of March and I'm only required to do an EKG and my family has a history of cardiac problems however I don't so I think you should speak with your surgeons office about the stress test

Yeah I sent them an email about this STRESS TEST. I just felt that this Dr is trying to MAKE ME be a patient. I said I was going to go along with it to get this clearance but after that he is canned. Don't need medical problems ($) I don't have lol.

My ECG was fine, no heart issues but my cardiologist still did an echo and stress test. Said he does it before signing off on any bariatric surgery patients. Not so much because he might not sign off on surgery but to make sure the full risk level is understood. I got the echo and stress test done in the same appt., about 2 hours total. Wasn't a big deal. Turns out I have a slight thickening of the left ventricular artery which hasn't given me any problems and he cleared me surgery. Just like every surgeon's office has slightly different plans/requirements pre and post op, some cardiologists do more testing than others. I wouldn't read any more into it than he/she likes to have a full set of data.

Oh and my only "follow-up" appointment with him was just to have him go over the actual results of the test - he didn't conduct the test, a technician did. I even asked if I needed to see him after surgery or have the testing again later to monitoring the thickening they found. He said only if I wanted to in maybe a year or so. Since the thickening was so slight that losing the weight would probably reverse it but that if I had any problems or wanted to check on it later to let him know. He left it up to me. Didn't try to push for regular follow up appointments.

The stress test and echocardiogram was required for me as well - even after a perfect EKG. All part of my surgeon and my cardiologist's requirements. I was glad to have it actually - I'd rather know about any problems ahead of time. I actually do have some thickening already - but I am diabetic also (type 1) so I am looking at it a bit differently.

After my EKG The Dr ordered a 2 day stress test. I am not able to run on a tread mill so they gave me some injections and then did the testing. Everything was fine. I also wanted to be sure everything was ok. I made sure I was in the best health possible before my surgery. Followed the 6 month pre-diet, exercised , did all my testing, saw the Nut once and had 7 visits with the Psych. It took me 7 months of jumping through all the hoops but I finally had my surgery on Jan 26th this year.

I had no cardiac problems but my PCP read my EKG and thought it was sluggish. Had to to the stress test 2 days before surgery. It all worked out ok. Just think that they are covering all bases for your good! Best wishes

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
