6 days post op...... diarrhea

Recommended Posts

So I was sleeved on Tuesday the 23rd and other than BAD gas pains the first evening I've felt pretty good,

was released about 24 hrs after the procedure and haven't looked back.

Weight loss has been averaging 2lbs a day tho i must confess I'm not meeting my liquid requirements
and have started to find excuses not to drink another Protein Drink.< br />
After being released I took a stool softener for the first 3 days as I didn't want to be straining with a
sore tummy and yesterday had my first BM, great I think, that came out smooth, lol well today I've had
the screaming diarrhea all day long and am not sure if this is normal or not, I mean I must be 3-4 lbs
lighter than when I woke this morning, its that bad.

So is this something that is normal and to be expected? I understand liquid in liquid out but didn't think
it would be this bad.

I didn't rush my bowels to wake up. I let it happen naturally. Because I was on the liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery and the bowel prep right before, there was nothing of substance in there. On day 5 my bowels woke up..at 2 am..and I had diarrhea for days.

I was adding benefiber to my liquid drinks to try and get my bowels moving after surgery and my first BM was ok but still a struggle so I too took laxatives over 2 days to get things going and ended up back in hospital because I was severely dehydrated! Be careful with laxatives/stool softeners as they can dry you up very quickly and if you arent getting enough Water in, then its not good.

Since coming back out of hospital after I was re-hydrated most of my BM (which havent been many) have been diarrhea with lots of pain just before hand.

I had my sleeve surgery the same day! I'm feeling great other than pretty intense pain when I'm "hungry." Had my first BM on Saturday. Without eating there isn't much, but I've been good about getting my liquids in and have had no diarrhea. You may want to ask the dr. My friend who is about 8 weeks out had a similar experience and it was C-Dif :(

I was very loose at first, too, and didn't take any stool softeners or anything. I hate to say it, but enjoy it, because you'll be constipated like no one's business before too long! [emoji31]

They way things were explained to me is liquid in = liquid out, so until you move into more solid food you will most likely have very runny stool. Be careful and always call your dr. or nurse if you aren't sure about things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
