How long before you felt ready to return to work?

Recommended Posts

I am planning a Saturday surgery and taking the whole following week off and will return back to work on Tuesday for a total of 10 days off. I have an easy desk job and unfortunately am planted at my computer all day long.

Hi! I would not take more than a week. It is really not a big of a deal operation. I took two weeks off and after the operstion we rented a car and travelled in California, we walked a lot in Disney and Universal studio and I tried all tides. I was fine. Just make sure you will walk a lot and you will heal faster.

My surgery is set for April 15th and I plan on being back at work the following Thursday. I too have a desk job so I'm hoping that everything will go smoothly. Still hasn't REALLY set in that this is happening but I'm sure it will soon enough.

That is the exact same timeline I had, my surgery was on a Friday and I was back at work the following Thursday. I have two co-workers that both had bypass surgery, they could not believe I was back at work that fast and that I could work the whole day. One of my co-workers told me that she was absolutely worn out from pushing her chair back and forth at her desk....

Im going for surgery March 8th and expect to return to work around 25th.

Im an airline pilot and not only have to comply to FAA rules and guidelines but also have the challenge of having to follow the post op eating regime of liquids, puree foods etc which are not really available at airport fast food outlets.

Obviously I sit around a lot but also it gets somewhat physical dragging bags, preflight checks require bending, squatting etc.

FAA Dr is happy with that as is my Chief Pilot.

I had surgery in Mexico on a Friday and back to work the next Thursday. I am a vet tech and on my feet all day, bending, squatting, kneeling, etc. I was tired but felt OK. I was on full liquids for 3 weeks, so I had Protein Shakes and other fluids available to sip at all times. Adding pureed fruit to my shakes helped with my energy levels. I also had to respect a 20 pound lifting restriction for 3 weeks, but was back to the usual 40-60 pounds after that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
