How long before you felt ready to return to work?

Recommended Posts

Basically, I'm trying to figure out how much time I should plan on requesting off from work. I had put in for a total of 3 weeks off (one prior to, and 2 after), but my supervisor is concerned that it may not be enough time to recuperate fully. Her daughter had gastric sleeve here in the states, and it was over a month before she was cleared to go back to work.

My employers have been fairly supportive, and I'll be filing FMLA paperwork, etc... but I have to admit the idea of taking a month or more off work freaks me out a little (okay maybe a lot). Logically, I know it would be fine, though tight financially, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Should I really plan on 3 to 4 weeks after surgery before returning to work?

Everyone's different but I only took a week off work with my sleeve. I had a job where I walked a lot but was able to sit at a desk quite a bit too. I had pretty much no pain after surgery though and had a very easy recovery.

I only took one full week off of work. I had my surgery on a Friday so I had a full week plus an extra weekend, but I had a pretty easy recovery and was ready to go back. I don't have a terribly strenuous job, though.

Good luck to you!

I wish I could take a week off I'm having surgery on Thursday and going back to work Monday.

Wow! That's a quick turn-around. But I know of another lady who couldn't take the time away either. She said she was a bit tender but was able to what she needed to with no real problems. Hopefully it will go just as smoothly for you :) Best wishes!

I have a desk job and returned to work 15 days post-op. I was okay in terms of pain and nausea, but I was still very tired. Fatigue was my main issue for sure at that point until I was onto more solid foods and could get more calories in. I just went straight to bed as soon as I got home from work each day in the beginning. Also, it's worth noting what food stage you might be in upon returning to work, as some are easier to deal with and plan for than others. I was still only on full liquids when I first went back to work, but progressed to purees in the first couple of days I was back.

Very good point. I also work a desk job, so I'd be okay on that side, but I don't want to cause more work for my co-workers if I'm still exhausted and making mistakes or having to leave early. Something to think about, I guess.

I had my surgery on a Friday and was back to work the following Thursday. Now, when I was at work that Thursday we didn't really do a whole lot (it was Christmas time and we had our company party that Thursday) then that Friday I flew to Florida for my college graduation ceremony. It was not too bad except that I had someone traveling with me that seemed to forget that I could not walk nearly as fast as they could so I always felt like I was 2 miles behind. After that I was back to work full time on the next Monday. I had an easy recovery so it was not a big deal for me.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
