I have a question on grocery bills

Recommended Posts

Right now I spend about $300 a week on groceries (sometimes a little more depending on the week) I know, it's fricken crazy.

Has your grocery budget gone down since having surgery or is it about the same? I know I'll be eating less, obviously but I'm trying to think if there's any extras that I'll be buying once I have the surgery such as Vitamins, etc.

I have come out ahead on the deal because I am not buying chips, crackers, Cookies, candy bars, soda etc. All this stuff was making me sick and fayt anyway, causing extra health problems that raised my healthcare expenses. The money I save is used for new clothing.

To the OP... for how many people are you shopping?

We spend $900 a month on groceries, restaurants, alcohol and takeout ... for 2 adults and one very picky cat. And we eat very well. :)

Our grocery bill has gone down some, but not as much as I had expected. We are now buying higher quality meats and grocery items although the quantities are smaller. Also, some of the specialized things I am purchasing, such a high Protein Snacks, are more expensive. I am eating healthier and more natural, however, and really enjoying it!

We have 4 people in our household. Me, my husband and our two boys (19 & 20). This amount is the amount I budget each week. It includes food, paper goods, cleaning supplies, everything. We don't drink so that's not a factor and have no pets.

I usually make a menu each week of what I'll be making for dinners and what the boys will be taking for their lunches and then I make a grocery list from that plus all the regular every week stuff that I buy.

Aside from Vitamins, is there anything else that I'll need to be buying post op?

Mine has stayed about the same. I buy better quality meats, Protein Shakes, Protein Bars, beef Jerky, so it is about the same amount just better for you.

@@Lovin2lose - get with your NUT and see what they recommend. There are lists on here of what you "generally" need immediately post but they vary from doctor to doctor.

I just wouldn't buy ALOT of anything as your taste buds pre/post may change. Like the OPs said - we buy healthier :D

Mine personally has gone down. We eat out a lot, but again - I am buying less "junk" :)

I spend a lot on Protein bars now (they aren't cheap!) and Vitamins. I would say, in general, our grocery bill is about the same or a little bit higher when I factor in the protein bars. However, I spend MUCH less on eating out and buying Snacks at work!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
