post op work lunches

Recommended Posts

I did some searching on the forums and didn't see too much on this

I'm starting my first job since surgery and I'm trying to plan out what I can buy for lunches. I already made a bowl of tuna salad that I can portion out for a few days but I want to give myself a variety. I'm mainly looking for things I can bring with me in a cooler bag and I can neatly munch at my desk (I have a habit of working through my lunches)

I really love these, they taste really good, have a good amount of Protein, and are a perfect size. But kind of expensive

check out the blog "The world according to eggface" - she's about 10 years post surgery and does a lot of posts where she shares a day's worth of meals. she has a lot of great "bento box" lunch ideas that would be easy to carry to work in an insulated bag.

What kind of veggies & meat do you like? Are there any salad or healthy options, like an apple or banana, that you can take with you? How about nuts? Although they do have healthy fat, they have Protein and are a good crunch that can keep you going.

I love nuts but I prefer not to eat them, I feel they are too many calories for the tiny amount. But I love pretty much all veggies.

Nuts can have their place. I think a huge fallacy that places do is to place more emphasis on calories vs. types of food. A McChemicals (sorry McDonalds) hamburger would help you less than some nuts.

I see more people worried over getting in their Protein when in America, that is never the problem. The reason people regain at 3-5 years is going back to old habits (in many cases) vs. learning to eat healthy foods. Look at vegans and vegetarians and you see fewer people overweight.

Btw, you can always get unsalted, plain nuts. You can roast them in spices, you can get something from that.

I take cottage cheese, greek yogurt, low-fat cheese sticks, or leftovers from the previous night's dinner.< /p>

Congratulations on the new job.

Can I make a suggestion? I assume that you want to start your job out on the right foot and make a good impression as well as establish healthy habits? If so, I HIGHLY recommend that you not eat lunch at your desk. It is a terrible habit to get into. I know because I did it for DECADES.

Even if you pack your lunch, please try to eat it away from your desk. It is part of a mindful eating practice as well as a good way to establish some boundaries around your health and your time.

A book I recommend frequently about work life balance is The One Life Solution by Dr. Henry Cloud.

To answer your question about things that are easy to pack for a lunch: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, turkey, leftovers, etc.

I do sandwiches but without the bread, leftovers from whatever I ate the night before, hillshire farms snacking. If I'm running errands I grab Wendy's chili which is cheap.

Good call - I was ~just~ going to suggest this!

chicken salad or tuna salad with sliced cucumbers. I like deli turkey rollups with some cream cheese inside, good with a dill pickle spear. Shrimp cocktail. I really tend to take a lot of leftovers.

The only thing I can think of to add is greek yogurt with a little granola.

Yeah i was thinking tuna

Made a really good tuna salad the other day with hard boiled eggs, celery, capers, a little mayo, a little dijon mustard and a little lemon juice. I eat it in a hollowed out Tomato

Also super tasty with avocado

I keep a dozen or so flavored tuna packets in my desk drawer. I try to rotate around among the flavors.

They make excellent lunches.

So do the Protein bars and beef Jerky packs

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
