Awfully Sick at Time- 6 Weeks Out

Recommended Posts

Hey there! Six weeks out and I am now starting to have a hard time. I can't tell if I am eating too fast or too much but at times I get very ill. I will throw up mucus/slime about every 15/20 minutes for about 10-12 hours. It is horrific. I can't tell if it is my fault or something wrong. Has this happened to anyone else?

If I eat too much, or too fast or too dry or whatever, the slime works itself out relatively quickly, in less than an hour. If I get sick, and it's happened 3 times or so, that's the end of it. I puke, I feel better, I'm on my way. 10 minutes or less.

I would call the doc.

At 6 weeks there was a lot of crap shoot going on. eggs were supposed to be a soft food that wouldn't hurt me, but it was awful every time. If a food is treating you rough, back off it and keep to liquids for a bit.

When I experience dumping syndrome, there are some tells. I might get hiccups or sneezes. Then mucus begins to plug up my nose. I might spit out some mucus or slime. Then I might vomit for a couple hours and then I feel better and tell myself never to repeat that again.

Throwing up for 10-12 hours doesn't sound normal. It is common for individuals to develop strictures after surgery. If your condition begins to repeat itself again and again and your intake volume decreases, you might explore the possibility it might be a stricture.

Also avoid eating just prior to bedtime. There is nothing worse than experiencing dumping syndrome as you lay down on a bed or couch and try to sleep.

Please go see your Dr asap. It could be a serious problem. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the replies. I am really going to watch my intake and see what happens. Wolverine Girl. I am 6 weeks out and down 32 pounds. 28 pounds the first two weeks. I just keep to the plan and keep walking. Pounds are slow but inches are just starting to come off. I am already down a pant size. Find other ways to measure growth. I found this helped me from getting discouraged.

I lost about 2 pounds a week for the first 4 weeks and then it started coming off a little faster. Your body is going through a lot of adjustments right now. You are losing and that is fantastic! I had to start weighing once a week to keep from freaking out every time I would stay the same or even increase from one day to the next. I don't know whether anyone has ever not lost weight after the surgery. But I know if you follow the recommended Protein, Fluid and Vitamin intake you will lose. And you are! I even gained some weight while I was in the hospital which is not uncommon either. I was on IV fluids for three days so I was fairly floating when I got home. Just focus forward and keep up the good work!

I lost 17 pounds in the first week and a half but now am a full two weeks out and gained two pounds. It seems as though everyone's body reacts differently. My sister had this done last year and it wasn't until the 2nd and 3rd months when the weights started to come off fast!

It will happen- good luck!

I've had the vomiting with slime (long stringy mucus) but mine's random, like middle of the night, or middle of the day. Never matters, and usually has nothing to do with food. My doctor says it sounds like my esophagus is irritated for some reason and should go away, otherwise repeated EGD in a few weeks. I take Zofran and it goes away.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
