Curious on having a BMI of 60+

Recommended Posts

My BMI is 68. I understand that surgery has more risks when someone's BMI is that high and probably more complications. For those who had surgery with a high BMI (say 60+) did you have any complications at all? If so, care to share what they were?

My starting BMI was so high it was literally off the charts. It may make a difference though that I carry most of my weight in my lower body, but I had no problems or complications with my surgery or recovery.

I was sleeved April 20, 2015 and couldn't be happier with my experience.

My starrting bmi was very high and i had ZERO complications. I even joked with my surgeon that i didn't believe that she actually performed the surgery

I had the things you can't avoid...incision pain, extreme tiredness, sore back, but no complications at all

BMI was almost 61. I had a hard time bouncing back from the surgery and experienced terrible pain at my incision site for about a month. It took two months before I could sleep on my side/stomach, and I needed a lot of assistance going from sitting to a standing position for about two weeks. In fact, twice during the first week I tried to go from sitting to standing on my own and ended up on the floor needing to call EMS to get me back up (I couldn't bend my midsection at all without excruciating pain).

I think some of the issue was that I carry all my weight in my midsection, especially my belly (which contributes to additional pulling at the incision site), but my experience is pretty unique and not really representative of most people.

Honestly, don't worry about the surgical pain or complications. They are rare, and even when they occur, worth it (speaking as someone who had a lot of issues my first two months). The complications get smaller and smaller in your memory as the weight goes away.

You can read what happened to me here: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/355098-surgery-aborted-please-help/

Still going at it and hope to have another attempt at it soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
