Pain 3 months out - just slow healing?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 months out and continue to have abdominal pain in the centre of my abdomen and on the left side by my stomach. I have been to the ER twice and nothing was found - they did chest X-ray, blood work and abdominal ct scan. The pain will interfere with eating, and daily activities as well as keep me from exercising. I just wonder if others went through this? Pain, with no real cause I guess other than slowly healing? I don't want to risk something being missed... It really hurts and I am so surprised to be feeling this way so long after my surgery after feeling well for the most part.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I am surprised too. Have you had a complete..non ER workup? I would expect a bariatric surgeon to order an endoscopy to look for strictures or whatever. Do you take an effective PPI? I think 3 months you should be feeling alot better and not have pain - I would follow up with my surgical practice.

I have that pain I am 5 weeks out of surgery and I am suffering from those exact pains. Sometimes my Dr. Looks at me as if I am crazy and the pain is phantom. However I have started walking on my treadmill in the morning. I have been doing this for about two weeks and the pain has decreased greatly. But make no mistake it is still there.

I too am surprised you still have that type of pain. I felt like it took me longer than most when my pain lasted thru 5 weeks post op. The Dr contributed my pain due to my 4 prior abdominal surgeries and the large volume of scar tissue he had to work thru. But even with that, at 5 weeks I was 100% again.

I would probably engage both my surgical team as well as my primary care physician to get to the bottom of this. You shouldn't be having so much pain 3 months out that you can't perform daily activities.

Thanks everyone for your advise. I have a Followup appointment with my family doctor tomorrow. Hoping he'll order an endoscopy, as I am still in pain and food gets stuck after I eat. I have also been eating less due to pain so hopefully I get some resolution soon. I feel great though otherwise...just want to figure out what is going on

thanks again!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
