Soft foods diet and travel...

Recommended Posts

So this weekend I am going to a medical conference.

I have checked out the menus in the hotel and finding soft foods I can handle should be no problem. Fish tacos I can just pull fish out of, sashimi etc so I should be ok.

I'm just worried a bit about Protein intake.

Anyone tried to take unopened Protein shakes or powder in a carry on?

Every single time I check luggage it gets lost so Unless I'm going to Europe I refuse to check and only carry on.

I guess I could try to find a Walgreens or CVS option to buy Protein Shakes when I arrive if I need to but I would rather not spend my time seeking out a pharmacy.

I took Protein Powder sample packs and blender cup with me in carryon luggage recently when I went to Texas for a few days. I'm still a few months away from surgery but did it as a convenient Breakfast and chance to sample some powders. No issues getting through the security line with it. Once was even a sealed bottled with Protein powder in it - the kind where you add Water to the line on the bottle and shake. I thought that one might get questioned on the xray scan but it didn't.

I took an entire canister of unjury Protein powder with me to Atlanta the first week of February. I took a new canister so that it was sealed when I went. It pinged the xray machine and they had to look to see what it was, but all they did was wipe the suitcase and container to make sure it wasn't explosives or whatever and I was on my way. On the way home I had the now opened container in my suitcase/carry on and I didn't even get held up in security! I made sure to keep it in the original container just in case, but no one really gave me any trouble flying with it. I had to dump out my Water bottle at both security locations, but nothing with my Protein powder!

I think you should be fine.

You should have no issues taking Protein powder in a carry on. I did it multiple times. Ready-to-drink shakes wouldn't be allowed though.

Last week I traveled with ready to mix Protein Shakes with no issue. I would recommend breaking down a box of Protein Bars tho... I was stopped and searched as they show up as a sort of "brick".... Security doesn't like that .

I have also asked the taxi to stop at cvs , Walgreens etc on the way to the hotel to get pre mixed shakes and stock up. It has not been a problem.

Bon voyage [emoji93]

Thanks! I will stop at GNC tonight and grab some individual servings of powder. I have a few Unjury at home so I should be set!!

Don't spend the money on individual servings unless you prefer it. I put mine in a ziplock. I have taken it internationally as well as domestic without incident.

I went to Florida right after my surgery. I stopped and bought some of the low calorie muscle milk at a CVS on the way to the hotel. I sure wished I could have found a GNC or something similar where I could have gotten an Isopure or a better quality shake, but what I got worked. I can never get the darn powders to mix right for me unless I use my blender so taking my blender cup would have been useless. Of course the last day I was there I finally found a nutrition store and bought a bottle of Isopure....figures.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
