Out of pocket cost after insurance pays

Recommended Posts

There's not a real answer to that question as every surgeon or hospital, not to mention insurance company, is different.

Some hospitals and bariatric centers make you do various things that are not covered by any insurance.

So for you to get an answer that is applicable for your situation you will need to contact your insurance company and inquire about bariatric surgery and then factor in where you are having the surgery done. If you go to a pre-surgery meeting or seminar then they normally tell you if they require things not covered by insurance.

Hi. I was wondering for those whose insurance "covered" the surgery, how much did you have to pay out of pocket?

Thanks

As crazy as this sounds.......if I'd used my insurance then my out of pocket cost would have been $27,000+

By doing 100% self pay it cost me only $19,000.

How crazy is that.

Very grateful my surgeon and his group reduce their rates in that way for self-funded patients.

I had to pay a $300 program fee

$40 co-pay twice

$100 co-pay for EGD, X-ray, EKG

$200 surgeon fee

And I believe $100 hospital fee

So about $780 total

That is crazy! I know it's different for everyone, just wondering the ranges. Sounds to me like your physician encourages out of pocket to avoid dealing with insurance.

My out of pocket maximum for the year was 1500, that plan doesn't exist anymore, lol. I didn't pay anything for surgery. I spent all the money on pre-op cardio testing. By the time surgery rolled around, I was maxed out.

My deductible was $4000. It was normally $2000, but because it was barbaric surgery the deductible was doubled. That sucks but it was still worth every penny!

My weight loss center had a $200(?) program fee and then I had to pay a $20 copays for each monthly visit. That was it besides the cost of Vitamins, shakes, etc. The surgery was covered 100%

My band to sleeve revision is scheduled for 3/2 and I'm going to have to pay my $750 deductible plus the 15% coinsurance. I'm going to be out of pocket about $3,500. But all worth it for me.

It really depends on your insurance policy coverage you can call them directly to see if you have additional out pocket fee for bariactric surgery. My surgeon didnt have any program fee and info seminar is free. I didnt pay anything out pocket for surgery or office, pysch or nut visits.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
