Hey all!

I'm a week post op today and I've been feeling wonderful. Not much pain and I've been able to move around fairly well. The last two nights I have been up with heart burn or gerd. It's pretty rough and has been effacing my sleeping. I knew this could be a side edges but I suppose I didn't think I would have this issue so early on, especially since I'm still liquids only. Is this normal? I have a post op appointment tomorrow (Friday) and will speak with my doctor about medicating but just wanted to hear from y'all first hand!

(P.s. I know I spelt it incorrectly in the title I wish the app would let me edit that)

Definitely. Did they put you on an acid reducer post op? My surgeon has everyone on prescription strength Pepcid, and goes to something stronger if needed. I'm 3 weeks post op today and I'm on protonix plus tums/Pepcid as needed. I have t had reflux but feel the juices literally roiling in my stomach. It also makes me feel hungry.

Very common, my surgeon has pretty much everyone on 40 mg omeprazole daily starting the day after surgery.

This is very normal while your stomach is swollen. If it's primarily a problem at night try putting 6" lifts under the head of your bed for a while. Also, if you're not on an acid reducer or not taking it twice per day, check with your doc. Many patients will take a PPI for life after the sleeve. I know I will. Mine got MUCH better after the first month and I was able to return my bed to the flat position. Good luck!

Most surgeons prescribe a PPI immediately post-op. If you aren't on one already, definitely ask your surgeon ASAP.

Thank you all so much for the great advise. I wasn't placed on a PPI. I go back tomorrow and will make sure to get a perception. I have never (in my whole life) had acid reflux so honestly I was a bit confused at first. The last two nights have been sleepless because of it. I'm curious if they never gave me one because I've never had it before. Thankfully this hasn't made me feel hungry, I haven't been hungry since my surgery, but it makes me feel gross. Like something is wrong with my stomach.

I can't take protonix; it gave me horrible diarrhea and left me dehydrated. Now, with the research that came out saying Prilosec and drugs in that family increase the danger of dementia by 44%, I don't think I want to take it anymore. Anyone have any suggestions? My heartburn is so bad, I'm conducting taking Prilosec anyway.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
