Warning: I'm hungry and whining

Recommended Posts

I need to whine. Why did I not realize that I would be hungry on a liquid diet? I have no answer. My surgeon allows me 3-4 Protein Shakes a day and Clear liquids. I'm starting to be really jealous of the people whose Dr allows them a real dinner. I took a nap and dreamed about food.< /p>

I'm on day one.

I feel like the cat in the Sad Cat Diary. "Dear Diary, my food dish is now only half full. It is obvious I shall soon starve to death.... This may be my last entry."

Yeah...

You're probably gonna die of starvation...

Or kill someone out of frustration!!!

Of course, I jest (for your sake, I hope I jest!!)..

But yeah, the liquid diet SUX BALLS!!!

As harsh as this may sound, you've just gotta suck it up and get on with it...

What you may be experiencing is head hunger...

As you've not chewed anything, you body assumes you've not eaten..

Have a crack at chewing some ice cubes...

It's like food AND water!!

And if all else fails, come in here and go nuts at some d*ckhead who asks whether it's ok to have a Coke and pizza at the end of week one...

Good luck!!!

Day 8 post op here, I'm also on a liquid diet. It totally sucks! I'm fed up with my Protein and I can taste my medication just thinking about it. Today, I served my husbands dinner and I took a small piece of meat from his plate. Sucked on it, chewed it a couple of times and spit it out. I realized it wasn't all that. It's definitely all In the head.

hi there! I am 3 days post op and have serious gas build up in my chest in shoulders. I was discharged from the hospital yesterday. While in the hospital I did over 10,000 steps by walking the halls night and day and that helped. Is this normal to still feel this pain?

hi there,

As for myself, I didn't have any issues with the gas til about day 3. It was kinda weird, didn't have much pain but I felt bloated, very gassy, and my stomach wouldn't stop making this very loud noises. My daughter could hear from the other end of the room. That only lasted about two days though. So I guess everyone body deals with it differently. Walk as much as you can, it really helps relieve pressure.

I'm a week post op and I still feel gas pain. Not as extreme but trust me it's there! I'm using gas x multiple times a day. It's normal. Keep up the walking if possible and take the medicine. You're doing great!

My doctor didn't require a pre-op liquid diet (I didn't even know that was a thing until I joined these forums) - I can only imagine how rough that is without the surgery. When I was post-op and on all liquids it was torture. I was hungry all the time but swallowing anything was painful for the first week. The second week the pain went away and my desire to eat surged so I tried a little Tomato parmesan bisque and immediately regretted it (far too rich).

I had to accept the suffering and just deal. I did it over a long break from work so that helped but it put a damper on my holidays! Good news is it'll be over soon enough :) Hang in there!

Preop diet I had a 6 month high Protein low carb diet I had to follow and lost 35 pounds. Two days before surgery I had liquid only and lost 4 more pounds. Two weeks after surgery I had to be on liquids and that included Protein shakes and Soups. plus Jello and popsicles. I had no hunger and got through it without any real physical or emotional problems

But the gas oh my gosh! Yep gas hurts big time! Mine started 3 days after surgery and it was in the lower right back side. I had no idea what the pain was at first. It was so bad I had to go to the PCP. The day after surgery I had to have the PT come and using the lift belt to get me off the toilet as I was too weak to do it myself. When I told the PCP that he thought the pain was from broken ribs. Had X-rays done and turns out my ribs were fine. so he thought maybe they were just bruised a bit and gave me liquid Tylenol with Coedine. Four days later when the pain moved to the right front breast armpit area we all realized it was trapped gas. That was when I was told to take more Gas X strips. However the pain was like someone took a knife and stabbed me and twisted it in even deeper.

I had that pain for 10 days as I am physically not able to walk. It finally left when I was able to begin eating an egg a day and got things moving, if you know what I mean.

If your able to walk and move about that is the best thing for it and plenty of Gas X strips. Hope you feel better soon.

UPDATE: Okay, so after the first 2 days on the liquid diet, it was totally fine. No big deal at all. No hunger, didn't care about food. Then my surgery was postponed (long story) and then I got sick. I only needed to do the liquid diet for one week, so I decided to go off the diet while I was sick. I had a terrible sore throat and the usual cold/flu symptoms, and I wanted crackers. Anyway, I stuck mostly to the diet for a few days, then went back on the diet 100% a week before the new surgery date. And now I'm doing the hunger pangs all over again. Ugh. But at least now I know that tomorrow night I won't care about food again.

My surgery is April 4 i haven't been told anything about pre-op diet. I'm a insulin dependant diabetic both diets pre and post make me a bit nervous. What if my sugar drops.

Is anyone diabetic? If so some advice please

I'm new here. I just had my first consultation appointment with the surgeon on Monday and have started the high Protein, low carb eating plan. I'm really struggling with it - I feel so hungry all of the time.

I'm type 2 diabetic, not on insulin, but I do take an injectable drug called Byetta twice a day with meals.

I feel like I don't know what to eat and wondered if anyone knows where I can go to get a printed diet that tells me exactly what to eat and when. I am keeping a food journal.

I have all of my pre-surgery appointments scheduled but I don't know my surgery date yet.

P.S. I have a headache.

Your Dr didn't give you info on what you can eat? If not, just Google whatever s/he did tell you and you'll find more info than you can deal with. A lot of Drs have it on their website.

I was starving for 2 days, with the 2nd day being the worst by far. This happens when your body is running out of carbs to burn, and it's trying to force you into eating more carbs. You may also have a headache and feel light-headed. It's important to stay on the diet at this point. The hunger will get worse and worse, until suddenly you realize you are not hungry and you actually feel pretty good. This is ketosis, where your body is starting to burn fat instead of carbs. It's kinda fun, because you don't care nearly as much about food. For me, that's a novel experience. From here on out, you should drop weight pretty quickly, if you stick to the diet.

Staying on the diet from this point forward should be fairly easy, as long as you plan well and have the right foods on hand. If you cheat and have a bunch of carbs, you will probably have to go through the miserable hungry stage all over again. Don't do it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
