2 wks post-op hungry and not feeling my restriction! HELP!

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 weeks post-op and the diet my doctor gave me said that I should only be ingesting 1-2 oz of liquid at a time for the first 3 weeks. I have read many forums where people state that they are never hungry and that makes me feel like a failure because I AM HUNGRY! I take 2 antacids a day so I know it is not that.

At this point, I can consume 5-6 oz of liquid (with no discomfort) over about a 20 min period. That is almost 3x what I'm supposed to get but I don't feel any kind of restriction. I'm so afraid this surgery is not going to work! :(

I think my weight loss has been acceptable. I'm down 18 lbs since surgery 33 lbs total. But I'm still terrified that when I start eating real food, I won't feel my restriction and I"m just going to start gaining.

Any help or insight would be appreciated!

I heard you but don't know what to say I do feel fool but if I'm not careful I can eat every 30 mins ... I guess we can try to eat what we need Proteins wise but this might head hunger or anxiety I don't know, we're in the same boat

I love what you said about your weight loss (It's been acceptable). Yes, it certainly has!

Take your antacids your surgeon hopefully prescribed for you. Sometimes excess stomach acid can mimic hunger. I have a feeling what you're really experiencing may just be what we call "head hunger". You THINK you're hungry, but it's really not physical hunger. I suffered with it pretty bad.

liquids are Fluid, and can just go right through your sleeve. That's why they go down a little easier for some. Don't worry, once you start on more solid food, you'll feel the restriction. I felt the same way. I even questioned whether the surgeon even did the operation! But then I had refried Beans...and could only eat 2 bites.

It will work. Don't worry.

I am 3 months out. At 3 weeks I felt the same way. I wasn't hungry though. I was told by a kind BPer that as soon as I was able to eat real food I wouldn't be able to do much. It was true.

I'm sure your surgery wasn't a fraud. Your body and mind are adjusting to a major change. I'm a week post op and haven't felt a bit of hungry. Although, I do feel like I should be eating or I need to eat. It's a mental thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to move out of the liquid part of my diet, but it'll come when my sleeve is good and ready. Stay strong! We're all here for support.

I am exactly like you, had The Bypass in January but my transition from liquids to foods was a wake up call. You'll be fine I have been speculating whether one not I had the placebo too but it's been done don't dwell on it, keep busy to avoid head hunger and take it a step at a time.

Thank you for this response. I am post op 5 days and doc has me on Clear Liquids no Protein till Saturday. I do take an antacid each day but I was feeling hungry all day while drinking 60 oz of liquid. Jello seemed to help to make me feel full as well as clear hot broth but it doesn't seem to last long. I am so ready for a Protein shake! I am walking for 30 min a day as well and do feel weak at times. I am dreaming of refried Beans so I am really hoping they fill me up in two bites!

UPDATE!

When I did start eating solid foods, I can ABSOLUTELY feel my restriction! I could get 6 oz of broth down but on solids, I'm only able to get down 1-2 oz right now. And my hunger has also gone away. I do feel some discomfort sometimes but nothing like I did when on all liquids. if any of you had my experience, please be encouraged because when you get to solids, it will completely change.

Thanks for everyone who gave me encouragement! :)

I asked a similar question three weeks out. I was like, where is this magical restriction I am supposed to feel? From day 3 post op, I have had no issue with Water. I can drink 8 ounces in 5 minutes with no issues. However, food is a whole different story. Especially solid Protein like chicken. I can eat about 3 ounces/ 4 if I push it to full. Trust me, you are fine. I was freaking out too! But the restriction is definitely there once you hit solids.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
