Feeling Weak.....Does anybody get weak when you are on pre-op or right after surgery on such a low calorie diet?

Recommended Posts

The whole first week post op when I was on the clear liquid diet taking in almost no Protein or calories I started to get very weak about the 3rd day in. Only if I were walking around for long periods of time and not taking breaks to hydrate and relax. Feeling weak is normal. Our bodies can survive over 21 days without food so you'll be fine, just make sure you stay hydrated and take it easy :)

It's normal and it would be unusual to have a ton of energy after the pre op liver cleanse, the surgery and then early recovery. I didn't get any energy back until after week six.

Yep! Got to where it was hard for me to lift my arms to wash my hair and I often had to sit down for a bit after my shower before I could get dried off and dressed. I had that all through my pre-op and for the first several weeks post-op until I was finally able to move onto more solid food and get in more calories.

Pre-op I had this issue. Post-op, I guess my body had adjusted to starvation that I was okay. Still post op until about 6 weeks when I could eat more, I only had energy in bursts.

I was weak for a couple weeks post op. It was hard to get through the day on just broth and sugar-free Jell-O. Didn't get much better when I added Protein shakes, milk, and juice. Bleh. You'll get through it, though. It's very temporary!

I have been feeling fine on my pre-op diet. I am using Meal Replacement shakes, which have about 1/3 the RDA of Vitamins and minerals in addition to the 20g of Protein and a little healthy fat. I am also taking a daily Multivitamin, and making sure I get a variety of generous portions of low-cal veggies and a piece of varying fruit each day. I am avoiding carbs and doing light exercise.

Must be nice to be allowed veggies and fruit on your pre-op!

I have seen that some people need to be on all liquids - that would be tough! My pre-op diet is two weeks of:

- Calorie counting, 1200 calories total for men, and 1000 calories total for women, which means the "real meal" has to be modest and quite low in carbs and fat

- 3 Meal Replacement shakes (I actually am using 2 and replacing Breakfast and lunch)

- 1 "real meal" per day of lean meat and veggies

- 1 piece of fruit

- 1/2 cup of fat-free milk or nonfat/low-sugar yogurt

- while not required, we are allowed to eat as many veggies as we want - I often eat a whole 12oz bag of veggies as part of my dinner, and snack on raw baby carrots - there are almost no calories in veggies, and lots of Vitamins and Fiber

@@Barry W Definitely a more liveable plan than my surgeon required. I was just allowed three shakes a day and one green salad (specific veggies) with calorie free dressing. It was 450 calories a day.

Ouch, not sure why they are so strict - the thing is, many people may then face compliance issues, and I'd think a less restrictive plan that patients follow would be better than a very restrictive plan that that some don't. Sounds like your willpower held though - well done!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
