RANT about perspective of coworkers

Recommended Posts

So I've been pretty honest to my coworkers about my surgery. I will know if I was approved this Frida so super nervous!! Anyways I had two coworkers say "why don't you do it the natural way" I mean I knew that I was going to hear grief about my decision but it kinda hurt. Like I felt explaining that I've dealt with weight my whole life and I'm now going to take charge and do something for me. Just wanted to hear if any of you have already heard negative remarks about the surgery? Btw these girls struggle with their weight too!

We've all heard them, and owe nobody an explanation about our own medical decisions.

If you choose to tell people, you're opening yourself up to uneducated, ignorant comments about WLS. You can either start a conversation educating them about WLS, or ignore them and move on.

Opinions, assholes, yada yada yada. Everyone's got one.

Yeah, the "natural way" is for us to all grow or hunt our own food, build huts, walk everywhere, bathe in the river, not get immunizations or prescriptions, and die in our 30s. Everything else involves tools. Bariatric surgery is a tool. End of story.

Ask them what they know about bariatric surgery. I bet it won't be much.

I would also guess that they know someone whose sister knows someone whose neighbor's cousin had a sister-in-law whose stepmother had bariatric surgery with complications.

Challenge them to call you doctor and tell him they disagree with his diagnosis. That will shut them up!

Hey Rogoflum....preach it, brother!!!

Makes you want to stare at them, totally flabbergasted and exclaim, "OMG! Genius! I never thought of to try that way first!" The sotto voce "idiot" afterwards is optional.

How come when women get breast implants no one asks....why don't you just grow them the natural way?!?

If they give an unsupportive remark such as "why don't you do it the natural way", tell them in a mild tone "I never thought of that. Thank you, I will take that into consideration." Then walk immediately away. It will probably only take them 2 or 3 seconds to realize you told them to go (bleep) themselves.

whey they say it, look shocked and grab a piece of paper and a pencil. "Diet and...what was the other one...exercise? I want to write this down in case I forget."

I also received similar reactions. But my favorite is "you didn't need to do something so drastic! You looked good as a big girl" [emoji849] key eye roll!!!! I often think this is people's way of being nice because they aren't educated on the subject. I've always been truthful with people. If the natural way worked for me I wouldn't be spending all my time and money on becoming healthy. Be confident with your choice. You have support from your loved ones (I hope), and you have support from everyone on here!

Greetings,

Allow me to put my 2 cents in the circle. Plain and simple.... Screw their opinion, they are simply haters. As you stated earlier, they too suffer with weight related issues. I believe that they cannot accept the fact that they will soon be the only unhealthy ones of the circle and they resent you. I have numerous hating nay sayers in my work place telling me to do it the "natural way", yet their also obese. I say do it for you and no one else. Good luck on your journey girlie!!!!!!

I have a lot of terrified family members that make unsupportive comments. I refuse to keep my lifestyle change a secret or pretend all of a sudden the natural way is working. So I explain I don't want to take medicine for 3 conditions for the rest of my life.. My whole family is overweight.. So it's an entirely new way of thinking

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
