Expected Weight Loss

I'm told I won't have sagging skin if I exercise.

Who told you that? I exercised every day, both cardio and strength training all throughout the process of losing 90 pounds over the course of a year. I was only 30 years old at the time. And I still had plastics to remove my excess skin. There are no guarantees. Can exercise help some with loose skin? Maybe. Can it prevent it entirely? Definitely not! Mostly exercise just allows you to "fill in" some of the loose skin with muscle. If you have close to 100 pounds to lose, no amount of muscle is going to fill in that much skin!

Going to agree with Jamie on this one. There are so many fallacies about preventing excess skin....

I did strength and aerobics and was FIT by the time I got to goal. The muscles looked great when I got rid of the excess skin....lol

So true! Watch the show Skin Tight! Gives a realistic view of people after weight loss. But most are 300-500 lbs and have a lot of excess skin. I am 50 and fully expect to have skin removed and a bust augmentation sometime next yr!

Well, that show is definitely on the extreme side of things. Most of those patients have lost over 200 pounds, which is a whole different ballgame. My husband was actually worried that people would watch that show and decide not to lose weight because they were so worried about excess skin. My response was "extra skin never killed anyone, but obesity kills thousands of people a year". I really hope most obese people realize that. I wouldn't want the concern over excess skin to cause someone to stay an unhealthy weight and die a premature death because of it. Skin can be addressed in so many ways, but obesity can only be countered with weight loss.

I'm 6 months out tomorrow, 51 yrs old, starting weight 268, and have lost 76 lbs. I'm at 192 now. I hope this helps you but individual results vary widely so I'd urge you to do your best and not compare yourself to others or to any arbitrary expectations.

Thanks! I start exercising with a trainer next week! Have never been very driven when it comes to exercise so looking forward to working with a trainer! Work schedule is crazy tho! Work anywhere from 50-75 hrs a week nights and days so that will be my biggest challenge is time!

At six months, I had lost about 84 pounds. It took me until 14 months to lose a total 0f 145. My daughter who is 25 years younger and weighed about 40 pounds less lost 100 pounds in 6 months. I had lots of skin, she has none. That gives you an idea of what is possible, but it is as unique as we are.

@@SparkleTime I really like that graphic. It seems reasonable and doable. So many people on these forums seem to have CRAZY expectations of how quickly they will lose and are only in for disappointment. But that info seems pretty conservative and sets a realistic expectation.

I just had my 6 wk visit with the dr and nutritionist yesterday. I discovered I haven't been eating enough protein! The nut could not emphasize enough that Protein will cause the weight to come off much more easily. I was not getting in the 60 grams needed but I have lost 27# so far. Now she wants me to take in 80 grams of protein! I have found a great Protein Powder called Nectar! The others seemed extremely heavy on my stomach and felt thick going down. nectar feels light like Water. I find I can finish it unlike the others.

@@mBig Had your nutritionist not mentioned a Protein goal for you before? 60 is still pretty low. I was told to try to get up to 100 as quickly as possible post-op.

80 is my Protein goal - interesting how plans vary. so far, I've not had any problem meeting that goal.

I will be six months out next week and I started at 244. I have lost 42 pounds. So far this chart runs true for me. It says I can expect to lose 35 to 45 pounds. Sometimes I feel disappointed in myself until I look at this chart again to remind myself that I am doing normal.

That's great!!! I feel the same way. I am 6 weeks out and only down 15lbs. I thought I would drop 20 like nothing. I started at 215lbs, so I figured I may lose slower. Hoping by the 2 month mark I can be down 20lbs. If I can average 10lbs a month I will feel secure in my weight loss!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
