Taking meds day of surgery

Recommended Posts

I know this is ultimately a question for my surgeon but I'd like to know how others have dealt with the issue of taking medications the day of surgery. I'm currently taking two medications for depression and anxiety and I can't go more than about half a day after missing a dose before I get some very nasty withdrawal symptoms. I'm pretty worried about this. It will be difficult enough to deal with the pain etc. of surgery without having to go through withdrawal as well.

Almost all doctors will be fine with you taking any regularly prescribed medications the morning of surgery. You swallow them with just enough Water to get them down your throat, and you're good to go. Of course confirm with him, but generally that little bit of extra, especially if you take it right when you wake up, won't matter and then you won't have any issues to worry about later in the day.

Ask your surgeon and write everything down.

I had very specific instructions about what to take the day of surgery (including meds my cardiologist prescribed for 3 days before and 3 days after surgery -- I called to see if that included day of surgery, which it did).

For the meds I took day of surgery I was told to use no more than a very tiny sip of Water.

Best of luck with your surgery.

I wasn't allowed anything by mouth, not even Water, after midnight the night before my surgery. Definitely ask!

I was allowed to take my anti-depressant and blood pressure meds with just enough Water to get them down.

I take HBP medicine, thyroid medicine and an anti-depressant. The hospital called me about a week before the surgery and told me I could take the thyroid and the anti-depressant, but not the high blood pressure pill. It acts as a blood thinner or something or other.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
