hhbbmm4 38 Posted February 22, 2016 Hi everyone! Does anyone else experience a high tolerance for alcohol after gastric bypass? I have a completely difference tolerance now than before surgery. I don't get drunk (not a bad thing). I can feel just a tiny bit tipsy for a very short period of time - maybe 20 minutes and then goes away. I even put it to the test this past week on our annual all-inclusive trip to the Caribbean when rum punch was flowing freely all day. Not that I need to be drinking and wanting to get drunk, but sometimes that relaxing fun feeling would be fine. Even my surgeon was stumped and said this is the first he's heard of a high tolerance as it's usually the opposite. So...just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same? gpmed 623 Posted February 22, 2016 The couple of times I've had some wine since surgery, I seem to feel it faster but for a shorter amount of time. Go figure.
catdaddy 232 Posted February 22, 2016 Yes, that's happened to me too. I found myself drinking like a fish and had to stop before it got away from me.
Gigs525 38 Posted February 23, 2016 Gastric bypass equals malabsorption of everything including alcohol. I'm having trouble with malabsorbtion of my anti-anxiety meds and it's torture. But, this too shall pass.
Spiceyfrog 269 Posted February 23, 2016 Yes, the same thing happened to me. I did not drink for the longest time because of the horror stories I had read on here. I was afraid I would be "that person" who passed out after one. Around six months post op, I had a drink at the casino one night, but had my husband drive home because I was waiting for it to hit....and nothing. Now, I am almost nine months post op and this past weekend we went to an event where beer and wine were included. The tickets were $25 and I figured since I could not eat my $25 worth, I would have a few glasses of wine. Well, about six glasses later, I was nearly perfect. I was munching on pretzels, so that may have helped, but I would finish a glass and feel a little tipsy, then it was gone in a matter of 10 minutes.
Donald Garvey 31 Posted February 25, 2016 I get drunk really fast and easily... 2 beers and I'm a little more than buzzed...before the surgery I could drink a 6 pack easily and just get a little buzz...but It doesn't last as long.
Rustycreaks 12 Posted February 25, 2016 I just joined this Forum a few minutes ago. Take a look at my Post under "my story" section where I discuss my use of alcohol. It might be instructive.
