Help me get off this emotional roller coaster...

Recommended Posts

So I'm getting sleeved in nine days, just started the pre op diet today, and I find myself so emotional. It's normal I know but I can't just fall apart now and stuffing it down with food is no longer an option. Anyone have some ideas about what to do with these emotions?

Congrats, it's normal.

It helped me keep my eye on the prize...why I'm doing this and what I hope to accomplish.

Good luck with the pre-op diet, and start checking out Protein drinks. I think I kept my energy so high because I had that stuff ready as soon as I was cleared for liquids.

This is normal. You've already done the hard part in making the decision to have the surgery. The rest of it's a journey for wellness. Nothing changes overnight. Stay on task, don't try to do it all at once, and keep pushing forward. You've got this!

And you are likely to go through many more roller coasters in this process. I took a certain, heads down, put my shoulder to the grindstone attitude. During times when I doubted I could succeed, I just followed the program and pretended I believed. When I went through suddenly being visible and so many people noticing me, I pretended I was ok, and eventually I was.

It is quite a leap of faith we all take at the beginning...

One of my big lessons is I worried about the wrong things. :) That acceptance has helped me in other aspects of life too. Just keep making good choices, keep your eye on the prize and you will find much success.

Prepare as best you can for the upcoming surgery.

* Make sure you have a good before photograph taken so that you can compare it with after weight.

* Walk at least 30 minutes every day. It will help you with the recovery process.

* If you haven't cut off caffeine do so now. When I went cold turkey on my diet Cokes, I suffered severe headaches and body aches for a week due to caffeine withdrawal. It is best you do not compound the effects of surgery with the effects of caffeine withdrawal.

* I had RNY surgery and I found that I could no longer swallow medium or large size pills or Vitamins after surgery. It took 2 months to recover my ability to swallow. So if this might be a problem purchase a pill splitter and a pill crusher.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
